Sputnik 5 marked a historic turning point as the first living creature was sent into space and returned safely. The Soviet spacecraft carried two dogs, Belka and Strelka, along with many other creatures.
In 25 hours, Sputnik 5 made 17 orbits around the Earth and collected valuable scientific data. The survival of Belka and Strelka proved that manned space flight was possible.
Less than a year later, Yuri Gagarin became the first man to fly into space using data from Sputnik 5. Belka and Strelka quickly became media stars, appearing in newspapers, postage stamps and cartoons. An interesting detail is that Strelka later gave birth to children, including a dog that was given to the family of US President Kennedy.
More than six decades on, the story of Sputnik 5 remains an immortal symbol of courage and the desire to conquer space. Dear readers, please watch more videos : Top 10 'Scary' Technology Devices of the Future.
