At the invitation of the Japanese government,President Vo Van Thuong and his wife, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, will pay an official visit to Japan from November 27-30.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman said this is President Vo Van Thuong's first visit to Japan in his new position and the fourth visit to Japan by a Vietnamese president since the two countries established diplomatic relations.
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan and also marks the 9th anniversary of the two countries upgrading to an extensive strategic partnership.
Ms. Pham Thu Hang said that the Vietnam-Japan relationship has achieved strong development in all areas in recent times. Exchange activities, including high-level and all-level delegation exchanges, have taken place and been promoted. Japan continues to be Vietnam's leading economic partner, the largest ODA provider, the second largest partner in terms of labor, the third largest in terms of investment, tourism, and the fourth largest in terms of trade. Cooperation between localities of the two countries has been constantly promoted. Up to now, there are about 100 pairs of relations between localities of Vietnam and Japan.
It is expected that during the visit, President Vo Van Thuong will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, meet with the Emperor and Empress of Japan, meet with senior Japanese leaders, speak at the Japanese Parliament, attend the ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations, and participate in a number of other important activities.
The spokesperson emphasized that the visit of President Vo Van Thuong and his wife, along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to Japan, takes place at a very important moment in the relationship between the two countries: The two countries will jointly organize activities throughout 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the visit is an extremely important event in the series of commemorative activities.
President Vo Van Thuong's visit to Japan contributes to further deepening the political, diplomatic, economic, trade and investment relations between the two countries, further promoting cooperation in new areas such as green transformation, innovation and digital transformation, contributing to strengthening the relationship between the two countries for the benefit of the people of the two countries and for peace, cooperation and development in the region as well as around the world.
Regarding the question of whether Vietnam and Japan will upgrade bilateral relations during President Vo Van Thuong's visit, the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson emphasized that Vietnam consistently implements a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation, and development, diversifying and multilateralizing international relations for deep international integration, being a friend, a reliable partner, and an active and responsible member of the international community.
"In that spirit, Vietnam wishes to develop cooperative relations with all partners, including Japan, on the basis of mutually beneficial cooperation, for the benefit of the people of each country, thereby actively contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world," said Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang.
