Thanks to the attention of the Party, State and local authorities through poverty reduction policies, capital support, science and technology and vocational training, the economy in areas with a large Khmer population has changed significantly.

The transformation of Khmer farmers in the province not only enriches themselves, but also helps each other grow, contributing to building new rural areas and sustainable development.

  Overcome difficulties with determination

In Nhi Truong commune, many effective economic models have emerged to help improve people's lives. Models of crop rotation, pig and cow breeding have been applied by many Khmer farmers, bringing economic efficiency many times higher than previous rice cultivation, not only helping to increase income, but also creating a sustainable production foundation.

Typically, farmer Kim Nuone (Bong Ven hamlet, Nhi Truong commune) is one of the Khmer farmers who boldly transformed the structure of crops and livestock, applying science and technology to agricultural production.

Mr. Nuone said: Since converting the land specializing in rice cultivation to growing 2 crops - 1 rice crop combined with raising cows, the economy has been stable. Especially, in cooperation with the Southern Seed Company to grow corn seeds, the output is stable, farmers here are assured of production. Participating in the corn seed growing model, farmers are supported with seedlings and techniques during the growing process; are provided with input chemicals and fertilizers at a lower price than the market and paid after harvest; and are guaranteed to consume products at a price 200-300 VND/kg higher than the market.

With more than 10 years of experience growing corn seeds, the last corn crop yielded 8-9 tons, with a profit of 80-90 million VND.

In recent times, policies such as the national target program for poverty reduction, socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas have contributed to supporting capital, land for production, and vocational training for Khmer workers, which have been effective, contributing to maintaining national solidarity and sustainable development. Rural infrastructure such as electricity, roads, schools, and stations are increasingly improved, creating favorable conditions for production and trade.

Farmer Thach Tho (La Ca A hamlet, Nhi Truong commune) used to be a poor household in the commune, but has now become a well-off household thanks to local policies on production capital and housing. Mr. Tho shared: Previously, his family only grew one rice crop on an area of 1 hectare of land, with unstable income. After attending a technical training course, he boldly switched to a model of breeding pigs.

He received initial loan support of 50 million VND from the State to build barns and breeding pigs, then received additional support of 50 million VND as capital to expand livestock development. With 7 breeding pigs, he sells an average of 20 piglets per month, earning a profit of 500,000-700,000 VND/pig depending on the time and market price, his family earns a profit of 120 million VND.

Efficiency from model transformation

In Tan An commune, the model of growing seedless lemons on rice fields has opened up a sustainable way of doing business for farmers in the commune in general, and Khmer farmers in particular. The model is being replicated, helping farmers proactively source seeds, reduce production costs, increase productivity and profits 10 times higher than rice cultivation.

Farmer Kim Hoai Phuong (Giong Ben hamlet, Tan An commune) said: Since switching from monoculture rice to seedless lemon growing model, the family economy has grown more and more. The seedless lemon growing model mainly requires high initial investment capital, especially for building embankments, seedlings, etc. The care period is from 18-20 months to start harvesting. The family's initial investment cost in the lemon growing model is about 300 million VND, currently the lemons are being harvested and the capital has been recovered.

The second year of lemon fruiting, the yield is twice as high as the first year. With 1.2 hectares of land growing seedless lemons, he is currently harvesting an average of 15 tons/month, selling at 15,000 VND/kg, earning a profit of 15-20 million VND/month. In addition, he takes advantage of the vacant land around the lemon garden embankment to plant nearly 0.5 hectares of coconut trees, earning 3-4 million VND/month. Along with that, he has developed a herd of 4 cows, both using manure for farming and increasing income.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa - Vice Chairman of Tan An Commune People's Committee said: In order to create conditions for people to escape poverty sustainably and become rich, the commune focuses on solutions to effectively implement programs and policies to support people to promote the economy and improve their lives. Promote support for the development of agricultural commodity production according to the value chain with economic models suitable for high-value crops, etc.

In particular, implementing agricultural support policies, helping farmers build many effective production models such as the rice production model according to the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice; the model of linking with seedless lemon growing enterprises to purchase products...

In addition, the commune mobilizes Khmer farmers to join cooperative members to facilitate linkage in seedless lemon production, increase income, and stabilize family economy. In the commune, about 11% of Khmer people are concentrated in 2 hamlets: Luu Tu and Soc hamlets. In 2025, the commune will support capital for programs and projects to support poor and near-poor households and Khmer people to implement models of raising super-meat ducks and breeding cows with an initial amount of more than 2.5 billion VND to create jobs and livelihoods for Khmer people to develop their economy on their own.
