Anyone can have a stroke.

Recently, a bus driver on the Ho Chi Minh City- Binh Thuan route suffered a stroke while driving a passenger bus. Before collapsing, the driver tried to stop the bus safely. The driver was taken to the emergency room but did not survive.

On September 5, a principal in Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province, also suddenly collapsed while giving a speech to open the new school year 2023-2024. Although he was rushed to the hospital by his colleagues, he did not survive.

The risk of stroke can happen to anyone, at any age and in any profession. It usually occurs in the elderly, but now there is a tendency to get younger.

According to medical experts, stroke prevention and treatment are most important, because when a stroke occurs, just a few minutes of irreversible brain oxygen deprivation will lead to death.

If unfortunately having a stroke, the patient needs to quickly receive first aid and be taken to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Gia Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Emergency Resuscitation and Anti-Poisoning, said that the cause of stroke is often due to cerebral hemorrhage, or cerebral infarction, or ruptured cerebral vascular malformation. However, for people over 40 years old, stroke is not only related to cerebral stroke, but also related to cardiovascular events: Acute myocardial infarction with severe arrhythmia and cardiac arrest, ruptured aneurysm, severe acute pulmonary embolism... Most cases of stroke and myocardial infarction in this age group are related to hypertension and atherosclerosis.

Among them, the risk factors for high blood pressure and atherosclerosis are due to unhealthy diet, drinking a lot of alcohol, smoking a lot, being overweight, being obese... while physical activities are significantly reduced.

According to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Gia Binh, through some statistics in Vietnam in recent years, the rate of people with high blood pressure has increased significantly. For every 3 people over 40 years old, 1 person has high blood pressure, for every 2 people over 50 years old, 1 person has high blood pressure.

Hypertension progresses very silently, some people can endure it so the disease is often ignored, subjectively thinking that they do not see any symptoms and often reduce the dose or stop taking the medication.

According to the Vietnam Cardiology Association, about 50% of patients with high blood pressure do not know they have the disease. Of the 50% of patients who know they have the disease, only half of the patients achieve the goal of controlling their blood pressure.

People with high blood pressure can lead to many dangerous complications. First, when blood pressure increases, the heart needs to work harder to pump blood. When blood pressure on the blood vessel wall is high, it will cause inflammation and atherosclerosis. In the heart, it can cause complications such as myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, etc. In the blood vessels, it can cause atherosclerosis, increasing the appearance of blood clots.

In addition, it also causes damage to other organs with blood vessels such as stroke, kidney, eyes... All complications caused by high blood pressure can be life-threatening.

According to medical experts, people over 40 years old, especially those who use alcohol, beer, cigarettes... need to have regular health check-ups and control their blood pressure. Everyone should measure and know their blood pressure. In addition, there are very easy and inexpensive things to do to limit high blood pressure, such as eating less salt (salt, MSG, seasoning powder, fish sauce...), not gaining weight, and exercising at least 30 minutes a day.

Professor Nguyen Gia Binh emphasized that most cases of sudden death are related to cardiovascular disease originating from high blood pressure.

First aid for stroke patients

According to Professor Nguyen Gia Binh, when discovering a patient has a stroke, people should quickly call an ambulance to take the patient to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible.

While waiting for the ambulance, place the patient on his side on a flat, hard enough surface to maintain balance, do not place on a mattress that is too deep and avoid moving to avoid aggravating the brain hemorrhage; loosen clothing, pull the patient's tongue to avoid the tongue falling back and causing airway obstruction. Absolutely do not let the patient drink water or take medicine, do not apply folk methods such as scraping the wind, pricking 10 fingertips, squeezing lemon into the mouth...

If the patient suddenly becomes comatose, and there is no pulse in the carotid or femoral pulse, chest compressions must be performed immediately.

Successful first aid will greatly affect the success of an emergency, so first aid in the community is very necessary and should be considered a life skill for everyone.

To reduce the risk of stroke, experts recommend that each person needs to have regular health check-ups to screen for risk factors, and if any, need early treatment (for example, if you have high blood pressure, treat high blood pressure, metabolic diseases, obesity, etc.); have a reasonable diet, scientific lifestyle; do not drink alcohol, do not smoke; especially exercise every day.../.
