Poetry touches the hearts of readers

Many people in the literary world were surprised to learn that author Thuan Huu was not yet a member of the Vietnam Writers' Association, although before the poetry collection "Picked up along the road" (Writers' Association Publishing House, 2025), he had published two poetry collections that left a strong impression.

At the launch of the poetry collection in April 2025, author Thuan Huu said that although he had been invited to apply to join the Vietnam Writers Association , he still hesitated. He believes that writing poetry is only to "pamper himself", recording the true emotions in the process of living and working. As the preface says, Thuan Huu wrote: "Sitting to pick up the scattered pieces of the soul / Contributing to life the voice of a lover".

Because he was not a member, he could not be called a poet in "black and white", but the literary world and readers have "secretly" honored this title for decades. Thuan Huu became famous very early in literature with the brilliant poem "Those Moments of Heartbreak" which was highly appreciated by the "king of love poems" Xuan Dieu during his lifetime. The poem talks about old love feelings that have never faded, but they are only very human moments of heartbreak, from which to cherish present happiness: "Everyone has a time to love and a time to remember/ Everyone has moments outside of husband and wife/ Don't blame the moments of heartbreak".

Because of the popularity of this poem, many people often call Thuan Huu "the one-poet", but if you read the poetry collection "Picked up along the road", many people will think differently because the collection contains many impressive poems.

What makes Thuan Huu's poetry attractive is the simplicity in language and the depth of emotion. Thuan Huu does not follow the sophisticated innovation or the embellishment of words. His poetry is as natural as breathing, sincere vibrations formed from life. Saying so does not mean it is crude, rather the simplicity has a certain wisdom that comes from the profundity in thought and expression: "Childhood is gone and I have gone far away/ Seeing a snail or a clam, I suddenly understand/ The pain hidden in the stone shell full of flowers" (Sea Snails).

Having been involved in journalism all his life, Thuan Huu had the opportunity to travel a lot and meet many people. He has many good poems about Da Lat, Tam Dao, Truong Sa... But Quang Nam, Da Nang city where he spent a long time brought many special emotions.

With more than 100 poems divided into 3 main parts: "Homeland-Country", "Relatives-Memories" and "Love of the Sea-Love of You", the poetry collection helps readers visualize the valuable poetic career of a person who avoids the title of poet, not wanting to make a career through literature. Someone once said that poetry is the person, reading the poetry collection "Picked up along the road", the public understands more about a very private part of the soul, more fully the portrait of a journalist, a politician named Thuan Huu.

Author Thuan Huu, real name Nguyen Huu Thuan, was born in 1958 in Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh province. He graduated from the Faculty of Literature, class 21, Hanoi University of Science (now Hanoi National University). He is a member of the Party Central Committee, terms XI, XII; National Assembly delegate, terms XIII, XIV; Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association from 2011 to 2021. In terms of literature, he has published the following works: "Nhung matt long" (poetry collection, 1987), "Ngon den ban day" (story collection, 1988), "Bien cau" (poetry collection, 2000), "Nhat along the road" (poetry collection, 2025).
