For many years, data has been likened to the “new oil” or “new gold”, demonstrating its importance in digital transformation strategies. Therefore, many businesses quickly run after the problem of applying technology and data to increase revenue and optimize profits.
However, from the perspective of an expert who has consulted for many businesses, Ms. Pham Khac Hong Hanh, Director of User Data at Pinterest, believes that one should not rush to find a solution to the problem, especially when one does not clearly understand the field and the needs of the business.
Ms. Hanh believes that many businesses today still think of hiring a partner or data employee to solve their data problems. With more than 15 years of experience working in the field at many large technology corporations, the expert believes that it is necessary to consider the data worker as a "thinking partner", a companion who understands the needs and defines the details and correct problems of the business.

If businesses have the right mindset with data from the beginning, they can process and shape data to suit their needs and avoid data that is too complex, overlapping, difficult to access, or worse, having data that cannot be used or misunderstood.
"We often remind each other that 'there is nothing worse than having no data'. Actually, there is something worse, which is data that is not standard or is misunderstood or misused," Ms. Pham Khac Hong Hanh shared at the talk show "Data processing and analysis - The driving force for national digital transformation", organized by the National Data Association on the morning of May 28.
"Data has a lot of surplus value. If data is exploited well and has connectivity, it can bring lasting value. Besides, we also need to discuss how to manage data effectively to protect personal privacy," Major Dao Duc Trieu, General Secretary of the National Data Association shared at the seminar. The association representative also said that it will continue to carry out activities to raise awareness and equip in-depth knowledge of data analysis and processing, promoting the application of modern data technologies in the process of digital economic development and national digital transformation.
In her presentation, Ms. Dang Thi Anh Tuyet, founder of startup MedCat, shared her personal experience of having to manually record her relatives’ medical records after each examination day, in order to save time for doctors. From that experience, through statistics from reputable sources, Ms. Tuyet said that the problem for many businesses is that 80% of data exists in an unstructured form.
Comparing unstructured data to "Tam's rice field", Ms. Tuyet said that the first thing to do is to clean the data to both digitize and restructure the data to create clean data fields for retrieval and processing.
Ms. Tuyet gave an example from the service that MedCat provides to insurance companies. With the current health insurance compensation process, the direct processing staff still have to type out data and recalculate to be able to come up with the most accurate compensation figure. Therefore, cases of guarantee or quick compensation within 30 minutes are usually only applied to basic cases, with a risk of error that the insurance company is willing to accept.

By applying technology to extract, restructure and process data, each insurance case can handle up to 200 data fields instead of 20 fields as at present, including many detailed data about the patient's condition and treatment. From there, in addition to optimizing compensation processing, MedCat representatives also aim to provide better healthcare methods for patients, all starting from the data stage.
Speaking to guests, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of VietJet Air, member of the National Data Association, said that the right approach is to start from data to define the problem and find solutions for the business. If we approach in the opposite direction, that is, to see a problem and find a way to solve it immediately, it will be very difficult to use technology to apply to complex products such as insurance.
With experience working from a hundred-billion-dollar corporation like AirBnB to a startup like SkinAI, Ms. Pham Khac Hong Hanh believes that companies in all fields and at any scale can apply data to increase efficiency. The expert recommends that businesses should have a "data culture". This is an approach that takes data as the foundation, in which leaders and heads need to have at least a basic understanding of data science , thereby having the right way to handle everything from finding personnel to applying.
"If leaders do not understand data, they may give up early or not invest properly," Ms. Hanh commented.
