Petko Ganchev is remembered while still alive and well. |
The incident happened before the match between Arda Kardzhali and Levski Sofia on March 16. Players from both teams stood around the center circle of the pitch to observe a minute of silence in memory of Petko Ganchev, who used to play for Arda.
However, immediately after the match ended in a 1-1 draw, Arda Kardzhali had to clarify that Ganchev was still alive. In addition, Arda had to deeply apologize to Petko Ganchev and his family.
"We would like to apologize to Petko Ganchev and his family. The club wishes Ganchev good health and to enjoy the success of Arda," the Bulgarian team said.
In 2009, an English amateur football club, Bishop Auckland, also caused a stir when they held a minute's silence in memory of former captain Tommy Farrer.
However, the incident came to light after the club's chairman, Terry Jackson, phoned Farrer's wife, Gladys, to offer his condolences, only to receive the surprising reply: "Please wait, my husband has just gone to the door to get the paper."
Additionally, in 2018, amateur football team Ballybrack FC in Ireland also found themselves in an awkward situation when they falsely announced that their player Fernando Nuno La-Fuente had died in a motorbike accident.
However, it was later discovered that La-Fuente had simply moved from Dublin to Galway, and had not been involved in an accident or died as initially reported. The club later apologised, calling it a "grave mistake".
