A clip about a generous Westerner by a Korean girl named Young-ju has attracted nearly 7 million views and thousands of comments on social media. Many people were surprised to see that Young-ju can speak Vietnamese and suggested "get a Vietnamese husband".

During a trip to the West with his best friend, Young-ju (28 years old) was surprised to bathe in the river, bathe in the rain , and was invited by many locals to pick fruit for free in the garden.

"I speak Vietnamese with a southern accent"

After a 10-day trip to Vietnam in 2018, the beautiful Korean girl decided to move to Ho Chi Minh City to live and find a new job. Renting an apartment in Thu Duc City since March 2018, Young-ju started studying Vietnamese at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City).

"Right when I was feeling pressured with my current life, I was impressed when I met funny and cute people here. Whether I knew them or not, they all smiled and greeted each other friendly. Everyone was willing to help each other. Feeling that I had gotten used to this vibrant life without pressure, I moved to Vietnam to start over," Young-ju shared.

In addition to studying Vietnamese at school, the Korean girl actively starts conversations with classmates, passengers on the bus, and motorbike taxi drivers to learn new words and communicate confidently. Any words she doesn't understand, she writes down on her phone so she can learn them anywhere. In her free time, Young-ju goes to a coffee shop alone and feels the rhythm of life in this dynamic city.

Young-ju's experiences in the West were recorded and posted on social media.

Young-ju confided: "When I was in school, I didn't speak Vietnamese well, but 90% of my friends were Vietnamese. When we hung out together, they didn't know Korean or English well, so I was determined to learn Vietnamese to talk to them. After 2 years of continuous practice, I was able to listen and communicate."

Having studied 3 foreign languages, Young-ju said that Vietnamese is very difficult because it has accents and words with many meanings, and pronunciation in the 3 regions is also different. In a conversation with PV, Young-ju also sometimes made mistakes when pronouncing, and this is also what made her determined to learn Vietnamese. "Studying in Ho Chi Minh City, I speak Vietnamese with a Southern accent. I can understand 50% of the Hanoi accent, but I don't understand what people from the Central region say. For example, people from the West say "men dat oi" which is "troi dat oi" in the North, "trau quo" in the Central region, "di man" is "di lam", "minh en" is "mon minh". Vietnamese is very interesting, so I'm still learning it every day," the girl said.

Love Vietnamese food

Having participated in a Vietnamese singer's MV, many people only recently learned about Young-ju with the nickname "Korean girl who loves Vietnam" through recent clips about the West with her close friend.

Wearing a traditional Vietnamese traditional dress and pajamas like her sisters, the Korean girl was told by the Westerners , "Go ahead, pick some," and "Pick some," when she asked to enter the fruit garden. She excitedly said, "I stayed for 4 days and 3 nights, but I didn't spend much money because I was invited to eat at every house I went to, and picked all kinds of free fruits to eat right there. I felt like I was part of the family. I recorded those moments and posted them on social media to invite my friends from Korea to come here and play. I didn't expect the clip to be so well received by Vietnamese people."

Another plus point that keeps the Korean girl in Vietnam is the cuisine, "every dish is delicious and cheap". The 28-year-old girl especially likes to eat bun cha, chicken rice, grilled rice paper, and fried corn. Recently, Young-ju also welcomed her grandparents from Korea to visit Ho Chi Minh City.

"During the 2 weeks my grandparents were in Vietnam, I took them to the market. My grandmother really liked banh it, banh xeo, bun cha, pho, and went to Tan Dinh church... Sitting in the coffee shop, my grandfather cried because he was so happy because this was the first time they were nearly 80 years old and had gone abroad," she shared.

Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Bao My (28 years old, Young-ju's close friend) said that her Korean friend was very persistent in learning Vietnamese and adapted to life in Ho Chi Minh City quickly. "Young-ju often asks me about the meanings of words she doesn't understand, the way of life, and the culture of Vietnamese people. To her, everything is new and interesting, so she loves to learn. Now Young-ju can eat some dishes that are not popular with foreigners, such as shrimp paste, balut, and also drink lemon tea on the sidewalk like Vietnamese people," Bao My commented.
