Scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology conducted a study called "Amount and intensity of walking on the risk of chronic lower back pain" to investigate the relationship between daily walking amount and intensity on chronic lower back pain.
The authors analyzed data from 11,194 participants with an average age of 55.3 from a Norwegian health study conducted from 2017 to 2019, and chronic low back pain was followed from 2021 to 2023.

Participants did not have chronic low back pain at the start of the study and wore monitors to track the amount and intensity of their daily walking.
During a median follow-up of 4.2 years, 1,659 people developed chronic low back pain.
Walking 1 hour and 18 minutes a day reduces the risk of lower back pain by 13%
The results found that walking more actually reduced the risk of chronic lower back pain.
Specifically, walking 1 hour and 18 minutes a day reduces the risk of chronic lower back pain by 13%. And the greatest benefit is achieved when walking about 1 hour and 40 minutes a day, with a reduction of up to 23%, according to the medical news site Medical Express.
Notably, the effect was even stronger and more consistent in people 65 years of age and older than in younger people.
In addition, walking at a faster pace or with a higher intensity, even walking less, can reduce the risk. The results showed that people who walked at a faster pace or intensity also had a lower risk of lower back pain.
Increasing daily walking activity may have significant benefits for reducing chronic low back pain, the study authors concluded.
