Appearing on the Love Station stage with a chess board for the visually impaired, Nguyen Thi Hong boldly introduced herself and her passion for playing chess. Having been playing chess since 2014, Hong revealed that she likes the bishop the most because although it is simple, it has its own value in every move.
Having been so familiar with the chessboard for decades, Hong only took 1 minute and 22 seconds to arrange the chess pieces in the correct position without looking: "For me, playing chess is as necessary as breathing every day. I always think about chess, even when I go to sleep."
The journey to find light and conquer the chess board of a 9X blind girl will be told in the Love Station with the theme "Chess - competition achievements and love in life", broadcast at 10:00 on June 15 on VTV1 channel.
Talking about her childhood, Hong said she is the second child in a family of four siblings. "From a young age, I knew I was visually impaired due to retinal pigment degeneration, so I was very self-conscious, I kept to myself and did not dare to play with anyone." Although she could not see, Hong loved to study and longed to go to school like her peers.
At the age of 7, that simple dream became a reality. However, the first year of studying at the school in the commune did not bring the expected results, after many days of discussion, Hong's parents decided to apply for her to study at Nguyen Dinh Chieu School in Hanoi . For a blind girl from the countryside to the city, Hong had to make more efforts than usual to overcome the misfortunes in her life.
Chess is a turning point in the life of a 9X girl
Before learning chess, Hong's life was full of self-pity. She went to the city to study boarding school alone when she was 8 years old. Her parents were freelancers, and the family had many siblings, so Hong learned to be independent early. At that time, Hong felt very sad and sorry for herself, but when she grew up, she realized that this was a blessing. She is grateful that the days of studying away from home helped train her to become an independent, confident and strong girl like Nguyen Thi Hong today.
Nguyen Thi Hong's proud achievements are the result of many years of hard work practicing chess.
At the age of 10, the chance to learn chess created a turning point in the life of this 9X girl. When a group of volunteer students from a university in Tu Son, Bac Ninh came to open a chess class, Hong signed up and did not expect much.
The most difficult thing for Hong was to remember the chess pieces because her eyesight could not tell which was the queen, which was the rook, which was the king, so Hong had to touch the details and try to remember to identify the differences of each chess piece. It took 2 months to get used to it, but the 9X girl never felt discouraged but rather became more interested.
During a chess competition while studying culture at high school, Hong caught the attention of experts because of her level and good thinking. Not long after that, she officially joined the Hanoi disabled sports team and regularly competed in annual sports festivals for the disabled.
In every tournament, the little girl won 2-4 medals, but the most impressive were 2 gold medals, 1 individual silver medal and 3 team gold medals at the 2022 ASEAN Para Games in Indonesia. This was also the first time Hong competed abroad.
Despite many difficulties, the young girl never felt discouraged, on the contrary, she became more passionate and determined to become better every day. The more she studied, the more Hong realized that chess helped her perfect her personality. Chess taught Hong about perseverance, meticulousness, and planning.
Chess also took her to many places domestically and internationally, giving her pride when hearing the Vietnamese national anthem played in a foreign arena. And especially, after more than 10 years of attachment, the chess house also helped Hong find her "other half".
Talking about her teammate and life partner, the 9X girl could not hide her happiness: "To me, Dat is a friend who can sympathize with me, an opponent in training sessions, a strong spiritual support for me in big tournaments. Now, Dat has also become a life partner who goes through all the storms with me." Chess has brought the young couple together, becoming a support for each other to face many challenges ahead.
The unexpected appearance of coach Bui Quang Vu opened up many interesting stories about the journey of Hong and Dat's tireless efforts. He is a teacher who not only helps the two young people professionally during the competition, but also witnesses the efforts and maturity on the journey of pursuing chess of each person, especially the beautiful fairy tale love story of this couple.
In addition to their time on the team, Hong and Dat also do business to earn extra income to cover their living expenses. Currently, the couple wants to do their job well and hopes to spread their passion for chess to more young people, especially those with disabilities.
What is the secret that helps Nguyen Thi Hong win medals in the international arena? All will be revealed in Love Station with the theme "Chess - Competition achievements and love in life", broadcast at 10:00 on June 15 on VTV1 channel.
