On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025), CEO of the Malaysian national news agency (Bernama), Ms. Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, gave an interview to VNA reporters in Kuala Lumpur about issues of interest to the press as well as the role of the two national news agencies in the Organization of Asia- Pacific News Agencies (OANA).
In the interview, Bernama's CEO particularly highlighted the important role of journalism and reporters in the era of the 4.0 revolution and artificial intelligence (AI).
According to her, reporters are not only the ones who transmit information but also the ones who preserve the truth in the era of digital information chaos. She believes that to use AI effectively in the field of journalism, journalists must understand the advantages and challenges of AI. AI has the ability to translate language, summarize content and analyze social media trends, allowing for faster and more accurate reporting.
In the field of journalism, AI has three major advantages: fast and efficient processing, data aggregation, and multimedia capabilities. However, AI also poses major challenges such as inaccurate information, changing the traditional role of information, and impacting ethical boundaries.
In fact, digital transformation is taking place very rapidly in all fields, not just in journalism, posing many new challenges for reporters.
Giving advice to reporters to adapt to the digital environment, Bernama CEO said that reporters must continue to learn, research and have a digital mindset to serve their work first.
In addition, reporters also need to adapt to the digital environment by improving their skills in using digital tools, taking advantage of the diverse capabilities of AI, engaging online audiences by building personal credibility through social media platforms while maintaining journalistic values and changing their journalistic mindset.
VNA and Bernama are both members of the Organization of Asia- Pacific News Agencies (OANA). VNA joined the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) in 1969 and is one of the active members of OANA. VNA is currently a member of the OANA Executive Board.
Commenting on VNA’s role in OANA, CEO Nur-ul Afida said that VNA has been a consistent and reliable partner in OANA, contributing positively to the regional media landscape through content sharing, policy coordination and discussion. VNA’s coverage of ASEAN and Indochina issues adds valuable perspectives. Bernama highly appreciates the cooperation with VNA over the years.
She also expressed her belief that Bernama and VNA can cooperate in developing AI tools for multilingual news summarization and voice generation in Bahasa Melayu and Vietnamese.
In addition, the two news agencies can also initiate cross-training programs by having editors, reporters and journalists from the two news agencies share knowledge on the use of AI, share articles through digital platforms and exchange information.
In addition, the head of Malaysia's national news agency said that the two news agencies can also share information content through a cloud-based news hub quickly and securely among OANA members.
During the official visit of General Secretary To Lam to Malaysia in November 2024, the two countries upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
According to CEO Nur-ul Afida, the upgrading of Malaysia-Vietnam relations creates opportunities for both VNA and Bernama to play a greater diplomatic media role.
Specifically, the two news agencies can strengthen strategic cooperation and collaboration in the information field in many aspects such as coordinating the production of information content; using AI-assisted translation tools to increase content accessibility for people of the two countries; reporting on important bilateral events with the support of AI tools to disseminate information in multiple languages.
Referring to the most effective areas of cooperation between the two news agencies, the CEO said that the current information exchange program and cooperative training efforts have had a great impact. She affirmed that this will not only strengthen the relationship between the two news agencies in the field of journalism, but also improve the quality of regional information./.
