Vinh Long province only has Ben Tre and Tra Vinh wards, many district leaders are commune secretaries.

According to the resolution on the arrangement of commune-level administrative units of Vinh Long province recently passed by the National Assembly Standing Committee, Vinh Long province has 124 communes and wards, including 105 communes and 19 wards.

Of these, 4 communes that did not implement the arrangement were Long Hoa, Dong Hai, Long Vinh and Hoa Minh (in Tra Vinh province). These 4 communes are all island communes.

According to this resolution, Vinh Long province has new wards named Tra Vinh, Ben Tre , Long Chau and Dong Khoi commune...

Ben Tre Ward is based on the merger of Ward 7, Binh Phu Commune and Thanh Tan Commune. The ward has an area of 31.99 km2, population of 35,917 people. The political and administrative center of the ward is located in Binh Phu Commune today.

In particular, Dong Khoi commune was established based on the merger of three communes: Dinh Thuy, Phuoc Hiep and Binh Khanh (Mo Cay Nam district). Dong Khoi is a historical place of Ben Tre, opening the Dong Khoi movement of the revolution in Southern Vietnam. The commune has an area of 41.12 km2; population of 35,384 people, the political - administrative center is located in Binh Khanh commune today.

Meanwhile, Tra Vinh ward was established on the basis of merging wards 1, 3 and 9 of Tra Vinh city.

Long Chau is the new name given to the ward, after arranging the entire natural area and population size of wards 1, 9, and Truong An ward (of Vinh Long city).

The new Vinh Long province after merging with Ben Tre and Tra Vinh has an area of over 6,296 square kilometers and a population of over 4.1 million people.

Ben Tre and Tra Vinh provinces each "contribute" to the new Vinh Long province after merging 65km of coastline, creating a new development space to the East, with mega projects such as the 500,000ha sea encroachment area of Ben Tre and the Dinh An economic zone.

The coastal route between Ben Tre and Tra Vinh is being invested to connect the two provinces and regions. Dinh An estuary is the exit point of the Hau River - an important branch of the Mekong River.

The resolution takes effect from June 16. The National Assembly Standing Committee assigned competent agencies to urgently prepare necessary conditions to ensure that local authorities in commune-level administrative units formed after the reorganization can officially operate from July 1.

During the transition period, local authorities in existing commune-level administrative units continue to operate until the new apparatus officially comes into operation.

The Government, People's Council, People's Committee of Vinh Long province, relevant local authorities and agencies and organizations are responsible for organizing the implementation of the resolution on administrative unit arrangement.

The arrangement needs to be associated with stabilizing the apparatus, ensuring people's lives, meeting the requirements of socio-economic development, national defense and security in the area.

The Government is assigned to accurately determine the natural area of commune-level administrative units and publicly announce it before September 30, and promptly conduct field measurements and determine boundaries to establish administrative boundary records according to regulations.

The Vinh Long Provincial Party Committee has just announced the list of appointed secretaries and chairmen of the People's Councils and People's Committees of 35 new communes and wards after the merger. Accordingly, the 35 secretaries of the new communes and wards are all appointed leaders at the district level:
