Thai girl brings South American melon variety to the highlands

During a business trip to Moc Chau plateau, we happened to enjoy a strange melon with a light aroma, purple skin, yellow flesh, and a refreshing, sweet taste. We learned that this is a Pepino melon - a fruit from South America, brought back to grow by a Thai ethnic girl - Vi Thi Thu Ha, owner of Thuan Thien farm, Chieng Di 1 village, Van Ho commune. Unable to hide our curiosity, we went to the place where this melon was grown.

Ms. Ha's Pepino melon garden is located right next to Highway 6, among the gentle hills, where the climate is mild and the soil is fertile. Going down to the garden at the right time when Ms. Ha and her husband are harvesting melons, at first glance the Pepino melons look like eggplants, hanging from the trellis, very beautiful.

Through a conversation with Ms. Ha, it is known that she was born and raised in Moc Chau, and has been passionate about agriculture since childhood. In 2012, after graduating with a degree in accounting from Tay Bac University, she worked as an accountant for a business in Moc Chau. In 2017, Ms. Ha quit her high-paying accounting job to return home to do farming, to everyone's surprise. Although her family strongly opposed it, it could not shake the decision of the girl who always worried about developing sustainable agriculture. In her parents' garden, Ms. Ha decided to look for new plant varieties that were suitable for the climate and had high economic value.

Through research and study, in 2017, Ms. Ha learned about Pepino melon, also known as “South American melon” - a small fruit, weighing about 200-300 grams, with a sweet taste and light aroma, sweet and cool to eat, rich in nutrients and high economic value. Realizing the potential, she decided to bring this melon variety back to test grow on an area of 200 m².

In the early days of planting, she encountered many difficulties, due to lack of experience in care, the melon plants grew slowly and had low productivity. But with perseverance and passion, constantly learning and adjusting care techniques, gradually, her melon beds began to grow well, produce even and quality fruit. Currently, she has expanded the area to nearly 1 hectare of Pepino melon with many interwoven batches, for year-round harvest. She said: On average, 1,000 m² yields 6 tons of fruit/year, with an average selling price of 65 thousand/kg in the garden, bringing very high economic value.

Currently, Ms. Ha's Thuan Thien organic farm has 3 hectares of organic certification. In addition to growing melons, Ms. Ha is collaborating with other households to grow melons, dandelions, herbs, cherry tomatoes, carrots, kale, and products for many localities, all of which prioritize cleanliness and safety. Inviting us to enjoy a piece of freshly picked, golden melon, Ms. Ha shared: Pepino melons do not use chemicals, do not ripen with chemicals, all are allowed to grow naturally, ensuring absolute safety for consumers. The family's melon products are supplied to AEONMALL supermarkets, stores specializing in selling organic foods, such as: Omgreen, Dat Viet, Moc Chau Food specialty stores and traders specializing in wholesale of Moc Chau agricultural products... This year, the family is expected to sell about 50 tons of melons to the market.

As a regular customer of Ms. Ha's family's Pepino melon, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, Owner of the Omgreen chain of stores, No. 120, Hoang Quoc Viet Street, Co Nhue, Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi City, shared: I have tried it and found the melon delicious, but to be assured, I have to go to the garden to learn about the care process before importing it to sell to customers. The happiest thing is that the melon is trusted by many customers in the capital.

Not stopping at growing and selling melons, Ms. Ha also wants to build a sustainable agricultural ecosystem associated with agricultural tourism, contributing to diversifying and increasing the value of agricultural products on the Moc Chau plateau.

Pepino melon, also known as South American watermelon, is native to South America. The fruit is small in size, usually weighing about 200 - 300 grams. When ripe, Pepino melon gives off a light, pleasant aroma and behind the thin purple skin is a golden, sweet flesh. In addition to its attractive flavor, the purple pigment of this melon also contains high levels of antioxidants, thanks to the abundance of flavonoids and phenols. These are compounds that can fight free radicals in the body, helping to prevent aging and protect cells from oxidative damage.
