A newly opened Japanese restaurant in London is making diners "dizzy" with the "most expensive steak in the UK" priced at up to 900 pounds (nearly 27 million VND) for a portion of beef weighing about 400g.

Aragawa restaurant, opening in Mayfair on October 26, will serve diners five types of steak, with prices ranging from 500-900 pounds, equivalent to nearly 15-27 million VND.

Among them, the sirloin steak, imported from Nishizawa Farm in Japan's Hyogo Prefecture, will cost £750 (nearly VND23 million) and diners can choose from 10 different cooking methods.

This eatery was the first overseas branch of the steakhouse chain, which first opened in Kobe in 1956 and Tokyo in 1967.

Customers' bills are expected to be around £750 depending on the type of wine they have.

Meanwhile, the most expensive dish on the menu will be made from Omi beef tenderloin, which is fattened for around five years.

The way cows are raised is also the reason for this sky-high price.

Aragawa's steaks are made from Tajima beef, a wagyu breed that has passed rigorous testing by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, based on factors such as marbling, texture, and age. The beef is also sourced from farms that raise fewer than 1,000 cows per year.

Normally, Tajima beef must come from a cow that is at least 28 months old, but the restaurant claims it waits even longer to ensure a perfect product.

The meat is then aged for three weeks while being transported from Japan to the UK, then grilled over imported binchotan white charcoal in a specialist oven that can only handle three steaks at a time, and then seasoned.

“Steak master” Kazuo Imayosh – who spent his entire career at the Aragawa branch in Tokyo and then moved to London to launch this establishment – will oversee the process rigorously, combining the meat with seasonal vegetables in a simple way so that the beef becomes the “star” of the table.

Kazuo Imayosh once told Bloomberg that thanks to his 40 years of experience, he can tell if a steak is ready by the sound it makes.

He will also receive support from chef Fumiya Kase, who previously worked at Michelin-starred restaurant L'orgueil in Tokyo.

A 1,000-bottle wine cellar, including the cherry-scented Château Barde-Haut 2014 from Saint-Émilion (£120) and Château Margaux 2005 (£1,400), is also available.

Prices at the London restaurant are higher than at the Aragawa restaurant in Tokyo, where steaks range from 55,000 yen to 99,000 yen (about 9 million VND to 16 million VND).

“We don’t overprice our products in the London market for no reason,” says Aragawa founder Kotaro Ogawa. “In fact, we don’t overprice them at all. It’s the same principle that one applies to rare whisky, burgundy wine, truffles or caviar.”

“We offer the best quality meat, which you rarely see even in Japan. That means the meat is overpriced, but we don’t price it high because this is London,” adds Kotaro Ogawa.

Kotaro Ogawa, who opened Minato City in 1967, confidently told the Evening Standard: “I feel confident in saying that you won’t find a steak like this in London or indeed anywhere else in the world.”

In 2021, a restaurant called Nusr-Et in Knightsbridge, London, introduced Britain's most expensive steak on its menu.

Costing £1,450, this tomahawk steak (a steak with part of the rib bone left on one side) was covered in gold – but it only lasted a year before being replaced with another that cost half as much at £630.
