An opportunity for sedans to regain their position.

Attractive pricing targeting younger customers, coupled with changing consumer preferences, is creating opportunities for sedans to regain their appeal and position in the automotive market.

In recent years, the sedan segment has been gradually declining and losing its position in the global automotive market. Automakers have successively discontinued several sedan models in their product lineups, replacing these low-slung four-door cars with a range of crossover, SUV, and MPV models. Consumers have also gradually shifted towards preferring high-riding, spacious cars with ample room. This has led to changes in sales figures, and ultimately, the idea of buying a traditional sedan has begun to become outdated. However, some industry observers now believe that the trend of favoring sedans may be making a comeback.

In an article published on the Detroit Free Press , analysts and several auto dealers suggest that car buyers are increasingly showing signs of fatigue with SUVs.

First, regarding price, Cox Automotive data shows that small cars average around $27,590, while small SUVs average $37,514. In the mid-size segment, the gap is even wider, with mid-size sedans averaging $34,069 compared to over $50,000 for mid-size SUVs. Edmunds data from the first quarter also shows that small and mid-size sedans accounted for 14% of total vehicle sales.

Unsurprisingly, given the ongoing conflict in Iran significantly impacting gasoline prices, fuel efficiency remains a crucial factor. Sedans generally offer advantages in terms of aerodynamics and lighter weight compared to larger SUVs. Reports indicate that gasoline-powered sedans can offer better average fuel economy than larger gasoline-powered SUVs.

Furthermore, Escalent's in-depth research on the US youth car market in 2025, published in February 2026, shows that young car buyers are increasingly interested in sedans. Specifically, Escalent surveyed over 1,000 teenagers aged 14-19, and the results showed that 51% envisioned driving a sedan in the future, 31% chose an SUV, and 14% chose a pickup truck.

In fact, the SUV-filled streetscape of today is a rejection of the sedans and minivans that Generation X grew up with. Each generation typically wants the opposite of what was once in the family garage, and for teenagers who grew up with crossovers, SUVs are now starting a new trend.

According to industry experts, people who have been eating the same thing for years suddenly realize they are ready for something different. Karl Brauer, CEO of iSeeCars, describes consumers and designers as experiencing "SUV fatigue." Meanwhile, Ralph Gilles, design director of Stellantis, admitted earlier this year that he too had grown tired of SUVs. Automakers seem to be listening.

Jim Farley, CEO of Ford Motor, has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of Ford launching new sedan models in the future. Reports also suggest GM is considering producing a new sedan. Honda recently introduced a hybrid sedan. Even Mitsubishi is reportedly reconsidering its strategy. Nissan's luxury brand Infiniti is also preparing to re-enter this segment with a new Q50S sports sedan expected to launch next year.

Sedans are not only cheaper and more fuel-efficient, but they also offer a better driving experience. They have a lower center of gravity, less body roll, and better responsiveness compared to crossovers and pickup trucks. According to Edmunds , sedans also tend to appeal to buyers who aren't trading in their old car for a new one, partly because their lower price makes them more accessible to first-time car buyers or those on a tight budget.
