Joy from new home

In the last days of June 2025, joy seemed to permeate every street from urban to rural areas in Dong Thap . Dong Thap province completed the program of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses one month ahead of schedule.

Thousands of households, especially poor and near-poor households, who used to live in dilapidated and unsafe houses now have a solid and spacious home to "settle down and make a living". This is also a vivid proof of the consensus and determination of the Party and authorities at all levels in caring for the people and poor households.

For poor families, a solid house used to be a distant dream. Mr. Pham Hung Cuong (39 years old, in Binh Thanh commune, Cao Lanh district, Dong Thap) and his wife and three children once lived in fear under a makeshift roof that leaked on all sides every time it rained or was windy. Mr. Cuong and his wife lived by working as hired laborers and weaving water hyacinths, with an unstable income, making it difficult to make ends meet, let alone build a house. However, joy came to the family when the local government supported them to build a solid house.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ut, a relative of Mr. Cuong, did not hesitate to donate 50 square meters of land so that Mr. Cuong and his wife could be supported to build a house. Thanks to that cooperation, along with the support fund from the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, Mr. Cuong's family now has a solid house worth nearly 200 million VND.

Building houses to help the poor in Dong Thap

The program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in Dong Thap province is the result of the government's strong leadership, the community's sharing and the people's spirit of overcoming difficulties. Secretary of Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee - Le Quoc Phong emphasized that the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses has created a widespread movement throughout society. This shows the strong influence of the program and the cooperation of the whole community.

A highlight in the temporary housing elimination program is the role of charity and volunteer housing construction groups. The entire Dong Thap province has established 62 charity housing construction groups, with 934 members, supporting more than 6,670 working days, estimated to be worth more than 2 billion VND. These groups operate with the motto "Those who have money contribute money, those who do not have money contribute labor and strength", helping the poor to have new houses and stabilize their lives.

A typical example is the Tam Tu Charity House Building Group in Hong Ngu City, which operates without asking poor households for any contribution. Expenses are drawn from regular contributions from members and benefactors. Each quarter, members contribute 1 million VND/person to build a spacious level 4 house or prefabricated house. This group has built 46 houses at a total cost of nearly 5 billion VND.

Towards the goal of no more poor households

Although the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses was completed earlier than planned, Dong Thap is still relentless in its journey to poverty reduction. Secretary of Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee - Le Quoc Phong requested that localities continue to support livelihoods, aiming for the goal of no more poor households in the province. Localities are also required to continue reviewing and mobilizing resources to support housing for other groups in need so that people can continue to overcome difficulties, aiming for the long-term goal of gradually helping poor households escape poverty sustainably.

Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dong Thap province - Vo Chi Huu affirmed that the provincial Fatherland Front will continue to coordinate and mobilize more resources to support difficult circumstances, especially expanding the scope of support for disadvantaged households in need of housing.

“The completion of the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in Dong Thap is the result of compassion and the spirit of leaving no one behind. Moreover, Dong Thap is and will continue to accompany and support people on their journey to escape poverty sustainably and build a better life,” Mr. Huu shared.

The program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, Dong Thap province has so far completed and put into use 2,159 houses (100%), 1 month ahead of schedule. Of which, 605 houses are for households with meritorious services to the revolution; 1,554 houses are for poor and near-poor households. The total cost of implementation is over 189 billion VND, especially over 62 billion VND from socialized sources and contributions from the people.
