Preserving brocade weaving in Thai Giang Pho

Weaving and embroidering brocade is a long-standing traditional craft, closely associated with daily life and passed down from generation to generation, imbued with the culture of H'Mong ethnic women in Thai Giang Pho commune, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province.

Nowadays, compared to other ethnic groups, the H'Mong ethnic group still retains many unique customs and practices. One of those beauties is weaving, embroidering, and sewing costumes, which are brilliant and imbued with the identity of their ethnic group.

The brocade costumes of H'Mong girls in Thai Giang Pho are beautifully colorful, with sophisticated patterns, creating an impression for tourists who come to visit and explore. What is special when weaving is that H'Mong women often meticulously calculate each needle and thread, the arrangement of motifs, and the size of the patterns on the fabric; the more complex the embroidery technique, the more patient and careful the woman must be. Traditional costumes are not only for beauty, but also a measure of the talent, dexterity, and diligence of H'Mong women. The decorative art on costumes of H'Mong people in Bac Ha district is recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

To preserve tradition, recently in Thai Giang Pho commune, a community embroidery association has been established with the aim of teaching weaving and brocade embroidery to young people; at the same time, creating jobs and increasing income for women in the area.

Brocade products of Thai Giang Pho Commune Community Embroidery Association are supported by Bac Ha district to be displayed at Bac Ha cultural market.
