Soc Trang eliminates nearly 9,000 temporary houses, creating a foundation for sustainable poverty reduction

TPO - With the determination to leave no one behind, Soc Trang province has completed the removal of nearly 9,000 temporary and dilapidated houses, providing solid homes for thousands of poor and near-poor households, meritorious people and ethnic minorities. The new houses create a solid foundation for people to settle down, work and produce with peace of mind, and gradually escape poverty sustainably.

On the morning of June 29, the Steering Committee for the implementation of the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses in Soc Trang province held a conference to summarize the program in 2025. Through review, the whole province has 8,917 temporary and dilapidated houses eligible for support from the program, of which 6,549 need to be newly built and 2,368 need to be repaired.

Specifically, there are 916 apartments for families of people with revolutionary contributions; 7,144 apartments for poor and near-poor households (5,612 newly built apartments, 1,532 repaired apartments); 458 newly built apartments under the National Target Program for Socio -Economic Development in Ethnic Minority Areas; and 399 apartments to support people with revolutionary contributions who have received support but are now facing housing difficulties.

Leaders of the Provincial Party Committee and People's Committee of Soc Trang province presented symbolic house plaques to households.

The total cost of the program is nearly 463.6 billion VND. Of which, support for people with revolutionary contributions and relatives of martyrs is over 40.8 billion VND; the national target program is nearly 28.4 billion VND; the movement to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses is over 395 billion VND; and support for people with revolutionary contributions who have been supported is nearly 13.6 billion VND.

Mr. Hoang Quoc Yen (Ward 3, Soc Trang City) emotionally shared: “From now on, we no longer worry every time the rain and wind come, no longer feel insecure when looking at the dilapidated, rickety roof. All worries have been left behind, giving way to the joy of having a solid house to settle down and make a living. This is truly a meaningful and humane work, demonstrating the connection between the Party's will and the people's hearts. We would like to express our deep gratitude to all those who have joined hands to bring a warm home to the poor like us. Having a solid house is the greatest asset in life, we will work hard to escape poverty soon."

Speaking at the conference, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairwoman of the People's Council of Soc Trang province - Ho Thi Cam Dao emphasized that in strong response to the emulation movement "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide in 2025", the entire political system of Soc Trang has taken drastic, synchronous and responsible action.

Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairwoman of the People's Council of Soc Trang province - Ho Thi Cam Dao spoke at the conference.

Ms. Dao affirmed that supporting housing for people with meritorious services, ethnic minorities, poor households, and near-poor households is not only a political task, but also has profound humanitarian significance, demonstrating the ethics of "Repaying gratitude", "Love others as you love yourself", contributing to realizing the motto "leave no one behind". By June 19, Soc Trang had completed the construction and repair of 8,917 houses, reaching 100% of the plan, 3 months ahead of schedule.

“The completion of the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses is a vivid and concrete demonstration of the Party and government's actions to practically serve people's lives,” Ms. Dao emphasized.

Chairman of the People's Council of Soc Trang province said that the program not only builds and repairs houses to protect from the rain and sun, but also creates happy homes, lights up faith, arouses affection, spreads compassion and conveys a strong message about a humane society, developed for people.

According to Ms. Ho Thi Cam Dao, with new momentum, new confidence and consensus from the whole society, with the new Can Tho City (merging Hau Giang and Soc Trang) , the work of caring for people with meritorious services, poor households and ethnic minorities must continue to be prioritized. Support does not stop at building houses, but needs to be expanded to livelihoods, education, health care, employment, aiming at the goal of helping people become self-reliant and escape poverty sustainably.
