In recent years, many majors in the social sciences and pedagogy sectors have attracted candidates. What are the future job opportunities forecast for these sectors?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên11/03/2025

In recent times, since the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) has had a strong impact on all fields, we have read and heard a lot of information that AI will cause many jobs to be lost, which means many people will lose their jobs. However, there are jobs and fields that AI cannot replace or cannot completely replace.

Top 5 occupations with high enrollment rates

According to information from Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Permanent Deputy Director of Duy Tan University, this industry is directly related to the movement of society, of the past, present and future, directly related to people. Helps shape a balanced social development. The 4.0 industrial revolution changes everything, but the relationship between people is still extremely important and cannot be changed.

This is a field where the majors are very stable. The humanities are always in the top 5 groups of majors with high enrollment rates. Pedagogy is also an important group, with quotas determined according to local needs, and the government has policies to support tuition and living expenses.

Social sciences and humanities and pedagogy are easy to learn, so the number of registrations is very large. This field applies artificial intelligence to the work process very much, predicting that some occupations in this field will have a narrowing labor scale. For example, the app teaches English taught by AI. However, it only affects work efficiency and cannot replace the role of humans.

Meanwhile, Master Do Hong Quan, Deputy Head of the Department of Sociology at Ho Chi Minh City Open University, said that social sciences is a field that spans many disciplines such as sociology, psychology, history, psychology... It, along with the economic sector, is the pillar of a country's development.

We are living in a developed society but every day we have to face many problems such as cultural deviation, inequality, conflicts between traditional and modern values, or awareness of national and ethnic history... All of these must be researched by those who study and work in the field of social sciences and humanities.

Our connection with those around us in the context of social development is also problematic. This industry will solve this problem, help us connect with our surroundings, provide perspectives, methods, and theoretical bases to research the society we live in, and build a more civilized, modern, and humane society.

Social sciences and humanities groups attract candidates

Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Bich, Director of the Communication Center of the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City, said that social sciences are fundamental and help solve social problems. Some schools are constantly updating their professions, for example, psychology is no longer only taught in public universities. Or the group of communication, public relations and languages has been trained and developed programs by many schools to meet the needs of society.

Currently, the fields of communication, journalism, public relations, languages, psychology... attract many candidates.

According to Master Ngoc Bich, the impact of technology will have certain replacements, but if you master technology, you will never worry about being replaced. We should not be afraid of technology replacing us, only afraid of people who are good at technology replacing us.

According to Master Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, information on social sciences, humanities and pedagogy not only provides professional knowledge but also contributes to creating thinking, ethics and life skills. When you go to work, businesses always require creative thinking, communication skills, teamwork...

In addition to traditional majors such as primary education, preschool education, foreign languages, history, literature... there are emerging trending majors such as psychology, communications, languages...

Career opportunities in this field are very diverse such as research, lecturer, editor, consultant... At the same time, there are also opportunities to work in an international environment, especially in the language field.

Interdisciplinary and integrated trends in social science groups

According to Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, the field of social sciences and humanities and pedagogy has the element of maintaining the development of society, expressing the relationship between people and people, maintaining the cultural identity of a country.

New majors in this field are being introduced by schools, for example Thai language, Asia-Pacific, American studies, economic management, international trade law... All training majors today must apply technology, especially artificial intelligence. Applying technology will help increase labor productivity, leading to the rearrangement of teams and human resources. If schools do not integrate technology into their training programs, graduates will not be competitive enough.

Master Do Hong Quan said that Ho Chi Minh City Open University currently trains 34 standard programs and 17 high-quality programs, of which social sciences account for 1/3, such as Southeast Asian studies, sociology... and recently opened psychology and human resource management.

The trend of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary training is a requirement in the training program, the borders between disciplines no longer exist, helping learners increase their competitive advantage. Learners also have to increase their competitiveness by supplementing related knowledge blocks.

Graduates must have digital skills to survive, think and work effectively in the context of technology development and information explosion like today. This will soon be the output standard in training programs.

In this context, how can social science graduates meet the various goals of job positions? According to Master Truong Thi Ngoc Bich, in the past 3 years, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance has offered dual major and dual degree programs so that graduates receive 2 degrees from 2 different majors.

Studying social sciences requires broad thinking, observing and evaluating problems from many different aspects, not formulas. You have to think about evaluating problems, analyzing, processing... so it is not as easy as many people think.

In 2025, the school will open two new majors: international trade law and software engineering. Students studying economics can learn more about technology or law to adapt to the job market.

All students at the school will be trained to use AI.

Master Truong Quang Tri informed that Nguyen Tat Thanh University also integrates technological elements into the social science group. For example, psychology will also have digital psychology applications, mental health care through digital platforms... The school uses technology in learning and teaching through simulation software for many majors. Lecturers must also use technology proficiently in teaching.

The school also designs open educational resources, shares learning materials online...

Participating in the program, students sent many questions to the experts. One student asked: ''I want to be a journalist, but in recent years I have seen that the benchmark scores for this major at schools are too high. So is there any major that is not journalism, with a lower benchmark score, but after graduation, I can still work as a journalist? Which school can I apply to in Da Nang?''

Dr. Vo Thanh Hai informed: ''The admission score for journalism is very high because only public educational institutions are allowed to train, the number of quotas is small but many candidates register. To overcome this, candidates can choose a major similar to literature with a narrow major of literature-journalism, students are equipped with knowledge and skills to work in journalism, or the media industry can also work in the field of journalism. Students who study foreign communications, public relations... can also work in press agencies. In Da Nang, Duy Tan University offers training in literature-journalism, or public relations, multimedia communications. Duy Tan University also trains interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and applies technology to the training program.

Students sent questions to the program: ''If I don't study English pedagogy, can I teach English at high school after studying English language? What additional training do I need to become a teacher? What direction does the English language major of Ho Chi Minh City Open University train?''.

Master Do Hong Quan explained: 'The English language department of Ho Chi Minh City Open University has met AUN accreditation standards. There are 3 majors: English teaching methods, business English and English translation and interpretation. You can study English teaching methods so that you can later work as a teacher at schools in the national education system such as primary schools, high schools, universities, research institutes, and English centers.

To become a teacher, you must have a certificate in pedagogy. In addition, you must be able to adapt to technology. Currently, AI creates many virtual assistants in English training, so the role of teachers is limited. You must know how to apply and master technology to improve the quality of your lectures. Ho Chi Minh City Open University also sends students to internship schools to improve their practical skills before becoming teachers.

Students asked: ''Between Vietnamese Studies and Oriental Studies, which major teaches more about history, culture, and people? I don't know what jobs and where graduates of these two majors can do?''

Master Truong Quang Tri answers: Vietnamese Studies provides in-depth knowledge about Vietnamese culture, history, people, customs and practices... Oriental Studies conducts broader research on the cultural history of countries in the Southeast Asian and East Asian regions such as Vietnam, China, Japan, Korea...

Graduating from Vietnamese Studies, the field of employment is very flexible, you can become an employee in cultural and tourism agencies, non-governmental organizations, travel companies, teaching, research... With Oriental Studies, you can become a translator, work in international enterprises, diplomacy, international relations...

Phase 2 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. includes experts:

  • Dr. Ngo Hong Diep , Vice Principal of Thu Dau Mot University;
  • Master Nguyen Nhat Quang , Saigon International University;
  • Master Nguyen Tran Ngoc Phuong , Director of Marketing and Brand Development Center, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology;
  • Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc , Director of Gloucestershire Vietnam Male.
