The role of cough syrup
Cough syrups are designed to coat the throat, creating a soothing layer that helps reduce irritation, says Dr. Roohi Pirzada, MBBS, FCCM (senior physician and critical care specialist in Mumbai, India).
These syrups often contain ingredients such as honey, glycerin, and certain plant extracts, which create a protective barrier over the throat lining. This barrier not only soothes irritation but also helps suppress the cough reflex, providing symptom relief.
Dr. Pirzada also stresses the importance of not drinking water immediately after taking cough syrup to soothe the cough.
“Drinking water immediately after taking cough syrup can wash away the medicine, reducing its effectiveness,” Pirzada explains, adding that soothing agents need time to form a protective layer on the throat. Drinking water too soon can disrupt this process, leaving the throat unprotected and the cough unsatisfied.
Understanding expectorant cough syrup (or medicine)
Unlike soothing syrups, expectorants don't primarily work on the throat. Instead, they target the bronchial system, helping to thin and loosen mucus in the respiratory tract.
Common ingredients in expectorants or cough syrups include guaifenesin, which helps break up mucus, making it easier to clear from the lungs.
For these cough syrups, Dr. Pirzada notes that drinking water can actually enhance their effectiveness.
“Expectorants, especially mucolytics, benefit from increased fluid intake because they help to further thin the mucus, making it easier to expel from the respiratory system,” says Pirzada.
Drinking water after taking an expectorant can help thin mucus, making it easier for the body to clear the airways and improve breathing.
The Importance of Reading Medication Labels
“It's important to understand the difference between a soothing cough syrup and an expectorant cough syrup,” says Dr. Pirzada, adding that it's also a good idea to consult the medication label for specific instructions.
Because the most reliable source of information is always the medicine label and your doctor. Each cough syrup may have its own instructions and recommended practices, so it is important to read the label carefully.
