Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed a Decision approving the Plan for implementing the National Power Development Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

The plan aims to effectively implement Decision No. 500/QD-TTg dated May 15, 2023, of the Prime Minister approving the National Power Development Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 (Power Plan VIII).

One of the notable aspects of the plan is the projected import of approximately 5,000 MW of electricity from Laos, potentially increasing to 8,000 MW under favorable conditions with reasonable electricity prices, in order to capitalize on Laos' potential for electricity exports. The Ministry of Industry and Trade has reported to the Prime Minister for consideration and decision on the import policy and the plan for synchronized grid connection for each specific project.

Regarding the list of important power generation projects prioritized for investment by the industry until 2030, the total domestic gas-fired thermal power capacity is 14,930 MW; the total LNG thermal power capacity is 22,400 MW; the total coal-fired thermal power capacity is 30,127 MW; the total capacity of cogeneration, waste heat, blast furnace gas, and by-products of the technology is 2,700 MW; the total hydropower capacity is 29,346 MW; and the total pumped storage hydropower capacity is 2,400 MW.

By 2030, the total offshore wind power capacity will be 6,000 MW; the total onshore wind power capacity (onshore and nearshore wind power) will be 21,880 MW; the total hydropower capacity will be 29,346 MW; the total biomass power capacity will be 1,088 MW; the total electricity generated from waste will be 1,182 MW; the total rooftop solar power capacity (self-produced, self-consumed) will increase by 2,600 MW; and the total battery storage capacity will be 300 MW.

The power development plan also includes research into the construction of two inter-regional renewable energy industrial and service centers.

This is a renewable energy industrial and service center in Northern Vietnam, located in the Hai Phong , Quang Ninh, and Thai Binh areas. In the future, expansion to neighboring areas may be considered. The center's scale includes approximately 2,000 MW of offshore wind power and about 500 MW of onshore and nearshore wind power.

Secondly, there is the inter-regional renewable energy industrial and service center in the South Central and Southern regions, located in Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, and Ho Chi Minh City. In the future, expansion to neighboring areas may be considered. This center has an offshore wind power capacity of approximately 2,000-2,500 MW and onshore and nearshore wind power capacity of approximately 1,500-2,000 MW.

The goal of the power plan is to shift energy from fossil fuels to new, renewable energy sources to reduce environmental pollution, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to Vietnam's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
