Colombian authorities are searching for Wilson, the service dog that helped sniff out four babies in the Amazon rainforest but went missing a few days before the operation was successful.

The discovery of four children lost in the Colombian Amazon rainforest after more than 40 days brought joy to their families and the people of the country. But not all the news was good, as Wilson, the Belgian Shepherd dog involved in the search operation, remains missing.

"During Operation Hope, Wilson got lost in the jungle in Caqueta and Guaviare," the Colombian military tweeted on June 10, referring to the mission to rescue the four children. Wilson is believed to have sniffed out the group of children and stayed with them before the rescue team arrived. In fact, rescuers found Wilson's footprints near where the four children were discovered.

Wilson was last seen on June 8th, when Carlos Villegas, a member of the Colombian Civil Defense Force, spotted it from about 40 meters away. "My teammate tried to play with it, reassure it, call out to see if it would come towards us, but the dog got scared and ran away and got lost in the forest again," he recounted.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro also stated on June 9th that Wilson had still not been found. According to him, at some point the dog had found four children, but they chased it away in self-defense.

After more than 40 days in the jungle, Colombian rescue forces announced on June 9th that they had found four Huitoto indigenous children who survived the plane crash on May 1st. The children were taken to a hospital in the capital, Bogota, in very weak condition and are expected to remain there for at least two weeks.

President Petro called the event a "miraculous lesson in survival" and believes the story will "go down in history." "The forest saved them," he said. "They were children of the jungle and now children of Colombia."
