As expected, Marvel Studios and Disney's superhero blockbuster " Thunderbolts* " continues to dominate the North American box office chart in its second week of release.
The film is directed by Jake Schreier and features a star-studded cast including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Harbour.
The 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) "pocketed" an additional $33.1 million last week, bringing its total domestic revenue to an impressive $128.5 million.
Internationally, " Thunderbolts* " also proved to be a strong draw, grossing a total of $272.2 million, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2025 to date.
Experts say that with a 55% decrease in revenue compared to the opening week, " Thunderbolts* " maintains much better performance than recent Marvel movies.
By comparison, the film released right before it — “ Captain America: Brave New World ” — plunged 68% in its second weekend. Thanks to positive word-of-mouth and audience feedback, “ Thunderbolts* ” is proving that Marvel can still be attractive when invested in the right direction.
In an effort to arouse curiosity and increase the heat for the second week of release, Marvel revealed that the asterisk (*) in the movie title " Thunderbolts* " is not simply an artistic detail, but also refers to the "transformation" of the Thunderbolts group - a collection of anti-heroes - into " The New Avengers. " This group will also appear in the blockbuster " Avengers: Doomsday " scheduled to be released next year with the expectation of repeating the resounding success of its predecessors.
In second place, Warner Bros. Pictures' horror film " Sinners " continued to show incredible staying power, earning an additional $21.1 million in its fourth weekend.
To date, " Sinners " has "pocketed" a total of 214.4 million USD in the North American market and 283.3 million USD globally. Notably, this R-rated film (restricted to audiences under 17 years old) has also received countless compliments from critics, contributing to its impressive success.
Next week, " Sinners " will return to theaters in 70mm IMAX format by popular demand. This is a testament to the irresistible appeal of this work.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' animated comedy " A Minecraft Movie " continued to hold onto its third spot on the chart with $7.95 million in its sixth weekend in theaters.
The big-screen Minecraft world has brought in a total of $409 million in North America and an impressive global figure of $909.6 million, affirming the successful trend of cinematic works adapted from video games.
Along with the dominance of the "big guys," the past week also saw the release of a few new works, however, none of them made a big splash. Overall, it was a fairly quiet week at the North American box office, but thanks to the strong performances of " A Minecraft Movie," "Sinners " and " Thunderbolts* ," the total revenue so far this year is still up about 16% compared to last year.
However, compared to 2019 - the golden milestone before the COVID-19 pandemic - the total market revenue still decreased by more than 32%, showing that the film industry is still in the process of recovery./.
