Daughter reveals Bill Gates has a mental disorder

Phoebe Gates (22 years old), daughter of Bill Gates, confirmed that her billionaire father has Asperger's syndrome (mental disorder).

Phoebe Gates revealed the mental disorder of Bill Gates - Microsoft co-founder - in the episode of Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast aired on April 30.

"For him, it was scary. For me, it was funny because my dad is quite socially awkward. As he's said before, he has Asperger's. So for me, it was funny," she explained.

Computer programmer Bill Gates (69 years old) has never publicly announced that he has Asperger's syndrome, although he has revealed that he is likely to have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - a range of mental disorders that fall under the category of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Bill Gates is well aware that his mind works differently.

"If I were growing up today, I would probably be diagnosed with autism," Bill wrote in his 2025 memoir Source Code . "Throughout my childhood, the truth was that my brain processed information differently than other people's. My parents had no guidelines or textbooks to help them understand why their son was obsessed with certain projects, missed social cues, and could be rude without realizing the effect he had on others."

He also explained that the term “neurotic disorder” wouldn’t come into use until the 1990s. Meanwhile, formal testing for autism spectrum disorders didn’t come into place until the 1980s, when Bill Gates was an adult.

Although Bill was never diagnosed with the condition, he knew from a young age that his mind worked differently than his peers.

"I always knew I was different in a way that confused people with my energy and intensity," he told Axios in February 2025. "I just kept going and researching things."

Bill also recalls the first time someone suggested to him that he might have ASD. “Someone said to me, ‘Are you on the autism spectrum?’ about 25 years ago. I remember thinking, ‘What the hell? I’m running a company.’ And then I realized, maybe it is. I mean, this autism spectrum is so confusing,” he admits.

Bill Gates has Phoebe with his ex-wife Melinda, whom he was married to from 1994 to 2021. They also have daughter Jennifer, 29, and son Rory, 25. The philanthropist is dating Paula Hurd, widow of Oracle CEO Mark Hurd.
