Specifically, information from Con Dao National Park and Sixsen Con Dao, at around 7:00 a.m. on December 14, 2024, at Dat Doc sandbank, a mother turtle weighing about 50kg appeared on the beach and laid 98 eggs.

Con Dao National Park said that, based on the morphology and biological characteristics of the mother turtle and consulting with Ms. Bui Thi Thu Hien - Sea turtle expert of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this is a species of hawksbill turtle (Lepidochelys Olivacea) classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The hawksbill turtle is one of five rare sea turtle species in the Vietnam Red Book that is seriously threatened and needs to be preserved.

According to previous records, Con Dao is the feeding habitat of 05 species of sea turtles and only the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) regularly comes to the beach to lay eggs.

"Therefore, the fact that a sea turtle, a hawksbill sea turtle (Lepidochelys Olivacea), came ashore to lay eggs at Dat Doc beach, Con Dao district, is a positive sign for the recovery of the rare sea turtle population in Con Dao," said Con Dao National Park.

It is known that every year, from April to November, sea turtles enter the breeding season and the beaches of Con Dao National Park have become giant nesting grounds, hundreds of sea turtles have come to these grounds to lay eggs and maintain their species.

According to statistics from the Con Dao National Park Management Board, in 2023, the unit rescued and relocated 2,262 egg nests, with a total of 217,257 eggs, to incubation lakes; the number of hatched turtle nests was 2,159. The number of hatched turtles that lived, moved, and were released back to the sea under control was 166,177 individuals.

On average, each year recently, Con Dao National Park rescues over 1,500 sea turtle egg nests, conducts artificial hatching and releases over 150,000 baby turtles back into the sea.

This is an extremely important activity in the conservation of endangered and rare animals listed in the World Red Book, highly appreciated by domestic and international nature conservation organizations.
