According to the police, many schools have now applied the “Electronic Contact Book” application or allowed to look up student information directly on the website, helping parents conveniently monitor their children’s learning results. However, scammers have taken advantage of this form to commit acts of property appropriation and personal data theft.
Recently, in some provinces and cities, there have been many cases of parents receiving calls impersonating the School Board or homeroom teachers.
The subjects gave reasons such as "supplementing student records", "confirming electronic identification codes for students" or "installing the Electronic Contact Book application", then sent fake links, requesting personal information, bank account numbers and OTP codes.
After just a few minutes of following the instructions, many parents had all the money in their accounts taken away or had their personal data exploited to open virtual accounts, borrow black credit and commit other illegal acts.
Faced with the above situation, Lao Cai Provincial Police have requested departments, branches, sectors and People's Committees of communes and wards to urgently strengthen propaganda and warn people about fraudulent methods of appropriating property through cyberspace, especially the form of forging "Electronic Contact Books".
Authorities also recommend that parents absolutely do not provide personal information, bank accounts or OTP codes to any links or applications of unknown origin, and immediately contact the police when detecting suspicious signs for timely support.
