Cong Phuong leaves Vietnam national team due to injury |
Preparing for the match against Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, the Vietnamese team only has 4 strikers: Pham Tuan Hai, Nguyen Tien Linh, Dinh Thanh Binh and Nguyen Cong Phuong. Coach Kim Sang-sik faced many difficulties when the star duo of Nam Dinh , Nguyen Xuan Son and Nguyen Van Toan, were both absent due to injuries.
In that context, the return of Nguyen Cong Phuong after nearly 2 years of absence is especially awaited by fans. The former HAGL striker is in very good form with Binh Phuoc in the National First Division and promises to bring a new wind to coach Kim Sang-sik's team.
However, Nguyen Cong Phuong unfortunately suffered an injury during training and was forced to leave the team at the last minute. According to information from the VFF, Cong Phuong suffered a ruptured fatty tissue under the sole of his foot. This is not a serious injury, but the 30-year-old striker will need about 2 weeks to recover and will not be able to participate in the match against Malaysia.
Coach Kim Sang-sik said he felt sorry for Cong Phuong and agreed to let the striker return to the club to treat his injury. Losing the Binh Phuoc star, the Korean coach has another headache with the Vietnamese team's attack. He will likely continue to put his faith in Nguyen Tien Linh even though the 2024 Golden Ball has recently lost form.
To ensure the number of players, coach Kim Sang-sik decided to call up striker of the Vietnam U22 team, Nguyen Quoc Viet, to replace him. Nguyen Quoc Viet is famous as the "king of youth tournaments" with many impressive achievements in the past. However, this 22-year-old striker has not yet made his debut for the Vietnam national team.
