Since May 23rd, the northern region of Vietnam has experienced its first and most intense widespread heatwave since the beginning of summer 2026. According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, temperatures in many areas of the North have ranged from 37-39°C, with some places exceeding 40°C.
In large cities, the heat absorption effect from concrete structures and buildings with large glass surfaces can cause the perceived outdoor temperature to exceed 50°C. Notably, the prolonged hot and humid conditions, even at night, lead to a surge in demand for cooling devices such as air conditioners, electric fans, and refrigerators.
According to Phu Tho Power Company, electricity consumption in the province has consistently remained at very high levels in recent days. Peak power (Pmax) reached 2,085 MW on May 23rd and 2,077 MW on May 24th. By 10 PM on May 25th, peak power reached a new record of 2,229 MW – surpassing the highest peak for 2025, previously recorded on August 4th, 2025, which was 2,064 MW.
Not only did peak power capacity increase sharply, but electricity consumption also exceeded 45 million kWh/day for the first time. Specifically, on May 25th, electricity consumption reached 45.71 million kWh, significantly higher than the peak consumption level of 41.6 million kWh recorded on August 4th, 2025, for 2025.

The above figures show that electricity demand in the North in general, and Phu Tho province in particular, increased early this year and continued to rise sharply from the end of May, creating significant pressure on the operation of the power system and ensuring safe, stable, and continuous electricity supply during the peak of the hot season in 2026.
In response to the increasing load demand, Phu Tho Power Company is focusing on mobilizing maximum manpower and materials, strengthening grid operation inspections, and proactively developing plans to handle incidents in order to ensure safe, stable, and continuous electricity supply to meet the needs of the people and production and business activities in the area.
Phu Tho Power Company recommends that customers use electricity safely, economically, and efficiently, especially during peak hours from 1 PM to 3 PM and 8 PM to 11 PM, in order to help reduce pressure on the national power grid.
To both reduce electricity costs and limit the risk of localized overload during the hot season, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) recommends that customers implement energy-saving and efficient electricity usage solutions such as: adjusting air conditioners to 26-27°C or higher and combining them with fans to increase cooling efficiency; limiting the simultaneous use of multiple high-power electrical appliances during peak hours; turning off unnecessary electrical appliances when leaving the room; and prioritizing the use of energy-saving appliances.

For customers using electricity for non-residential purposes, Phu Tho Power Company recommends close coordination with its subordinate power companies in shifting and adjusting load to help reduce pressure on the power system during peak hours. In addition, the company encourages households, production facilities, and businesses to consider investing in and installing rooftop solar power systems for self-production and self-consumption to proactively secure local electricity sources, reduce electricity costs, and contribute to the use of green and sustainable energy.
Comrade Phan Thanh An - Deputy Director of Phu Tho Power Company, said: “To ensure a continuous power supply in all situations, the company has focused on implementing maintenance and repair work on the power grid to prevent power outages before March 31, 2026. During the peak months of the dry season, the power sector minimizes planned power outages and prioritizes the application of modern technologies such as live-line construction (repairing on the live grid), online insulator cleaning, and the use of mobile transformers to ensure that people's lives are not affected.”
Using electricity efficiently and economically not only helps reduce living costs for each family but also contributes to reducing pressure on the power system during the peak summer season. Phu Tho Power Company always works alongside the people to save electricity, aiming for safe, efficient, and sustainable energy use.
