According to an internal memo seen by SCMP, ByteDance's open AI platform will be launched in beta and made public by the end of December 2023.
This move by ByteDance is in line with the company's new strategic vision to explore AI products and integration capabilities into existing products.
Last month, ByteDance also integrated an AI assistant into its Feishu office tool to help Chinese customers improve automation in the workplace. |
TikTok’s parent company is currently developing a text-to-image tool similar to Midjourney. ByteDance is already familiar with AI in other forms, such as the recommendation algorithm that has been described as the “secret sauce” behind TikTok’s success.
Large language modeling (LLM) is an emerging market that has attracted the attention of many other major tech giants, including OpenAI, the startup that owns the ChatGPT chatbot.
Last month, the US company also started allowing users to build their own custom GPTs based on ChatGPT for specific tasks without any programming experience.
Meanwhile, the cloud unit of Baidu, another Chinese tech giant, launched Ernie Bot to compete with ChatGPT in March 2023, through a one-stop platform for enterprise users to develop LLMs and related services.
Alibaba is no exception, launching Bailian, a similar open platform to support working with custom LLMs, in October 2023.
Last month, ByteDance integrated an AI virtual assistant into its Feishu office tool to help Chinese customers improve automation in the workplace. Feishu 7 is the latest office suite developed by TikTok's parent company, deeply integrating AI features similar to the ChatGPT chatbot and other LLMs.
The most prominent of these is the Feishu Intelligent Buddy assistant, which can support summarizing, reading messages, summarizing meetings, and analyzing content from PDF files. In addition, the application can also compose many types of documents such as emails, mind maps, spreadsheets, or surveys.
OpenAI has yet to offer its services in China and Hong Kong. Google is also making a similar move with its Bard Chatbot, while Microsoft has integrated GPT into its Copilot assistant across its product ecosystem globally and in Asia.
