According to Nikkei Asia magazine, one of the world's largest printer manufacturers – Japan's Seiko Epson – is planning to establish a clothing recycling business based on its paper recycling technology.
The new business is expected to be established in 2025, when the European Union's (EU) ban on destroying unsold clothing comes into effect.
Current conventional recycling methods use rotating blades to cut clothing, with a yarn recovery rate of approximately 10%. Meanwhile, the method developed by Seiko Epson is said to recover over 50% of the yarn, and the company aims to eventually achieve 100%.
To develop its technology, Seiko Epson has partnered with the Hong Kong Textile Research and Development Center (China). This center has close ties with global apparel corporations, including financial support from the Swedish clothing company H&M. Seiko Epson will leverage the center's relationships to develop sales channels with apparel manufacturers worldwide.
