Vietnamese director's "Coolie Never Cry" wins award at Berlin Film Festival

The movie "Coolies Never Cry" by young Vietnamese director Pham Ngoc Lan (38 years old) has just won the Best Debut Film award at the Berlin Film Festival (Germany).

The film revolves around an elderly woman who returns to Vietnam after many years living abroad. Her husband passes away, leaving her an inheritance of a coolie.

The return trip makes the woman relive past stories, while also facing the present life of her relatives.

At the Berlin Film Festival, the film Coolie Never Cries was screened in the Panorama section. This section is dedicated to introducing independent art films that are considered to have a creative and new cinematic perspective.

Currently, the Panorama category at the Berlin Film Festival is dedicated to honoring films that break the conventional thinking in filmmaking, bringing new perspectives around contemporary issues and stories, thereby introducing to the cinema-loving public new filmmaking talents, filmmaking styles and cinematic perspectives.
