On July 9th, at the 25th session of the Hanoi City People's Council, a question-and-answer session was held regarding the implementation of regulations on food safety and hygiene, attracting the attention of a large number of voters and people in the capital city.
Responding to questions from delegates regarding the numerous small-scale livestock and poultry slaughterhouses in residential areas that are not controlled, causing environmental pollution and failing to ensure food safety; and the amount of meat, poultry, vegetables, and fruits supplied to the market that is not well controlled in terms of quality, the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Nguyen Xuan Dai, stated that the department is developing content on agricultural development; will strengthen inspections and impose stricter penalties for food safety violations; and especially will consolidate all production, breeding, and slaughtering activities into centralized areas to tightly control input, output, and quality safety.
To further clarify, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Manh Quyen, emphasized that food safety and hygiene is an issue involving many stages, from cultivation and livestock farming to distribution, preservation, and processing.
The city has assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to lead research and propose policy mechanisms to support and encourage the development of centralized slaughterhouses, while controlling and gradually reducing the number of small-scale facilities. In addition, the city will strengthen state management, guide procedures, and strictly control slaughtering activities to ensure hygiene.
Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council, Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, noted that Hanoi is a special urban area with a large population and a huge demand for food. Ensuring food safety and hygiene has always been a priority for the City Party Committee, the People's Council, and the People's Committee of Hanoi.
Information dissemination, project implementation, and inspection activities have also been strengthened. However, Mr. Tuan acknowledged that the current state of food hygiene and safety in the city remains complex and alarming, with many long-standing shortcomings that have not been thoroughly addressed. This is a pressing issue, directly related to the health and quality of life of the people, and is currently receiving focused leadership and guidance from the city.
For example, on July 8, 2025, the Economic Police Department of Hanoi City Police promptly detected and apprehended a case related to the slaughter and consumption of pigs suspected of being infected with disease in Thuong Tin and Hoa Xa communes and Dai Mo ward.
