According to TASS, Cuba has officially submitted a request to join the BRICS bloc as a partner country. The request was sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In an interview with TASS, Russian Ambassador to Cuba Viktor Koronelli also announced that Cuba has officially applied for BRICS partner status. He also confirmed that Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has received an invitation to participate in an expanded BRICS meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming summit of the bloc in Kazan.
Earlier, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla affirmed his country's determination to strengthen relations with BRICS.
BRICS has undergone two expansions since its inception in 2006. In 2011, South Africa joined the original members Brazil, Russia, India and China. In August 2023, six more countries were invited to join: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Argentina declined to join in late December 2023, while the remaining countries, except Saudi Arabia, became full members on January 1, 2024.
Russia holds the rotating presidency of the group in 2024 and will host the BRICS summit in Kazan from October 22 to 24. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said that 34 countries have expressed their readiness to join BRICS in various forms.
