Popularizing the domain name “.vn” for people and businesses

Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has just issued a plan to implement the Program to promote and support people, businesses, and business households to have a reliable and safe online presence with digital services using the national domain name ".vn" in the province. The implementation of the program opens the door to expanding and popularizing the national domain name in the province's digital transformation process.

Giving opportunities to people and businesses

The program to promote and support people, businesses, and business households to have a reliable and safe online presence with digital services using the national domain name “.vn” was assigned by the Ministry of Information and Communications before and now the Ministry of Science and Technology to the Vietnam Internet Center (VNNIC). After more than 1 year of implementation, the program has brought people and businesses the opportunity to have a safe and reliable online presence. After learning about this program, Phan Duc Tuan (a student of the Faculty of Tourism, Khanh Hoa University) identified his digital face by registering for free on the website https://guongmatso.tenmien.vn/ for a domain name account “.id.vn”. With 4 simple steps, Phan Duc Tuan has his own address, which includes full personal profile information that can be used to apply for recruitment at agencies, enterprises, or create a personal blog, do online business... Similarly, Ms. Nguyen Thu Quyen (who sells dried seafood on Thap Ba Street, Bac Nha Trang Ward) has set up a website with the domain name ".biz.vn" to introduce and sell online with dozens of products posted to reach customers.

Provincial leaders and VNNIC leaders launched the online presence program with the national domain name “.vn” at the Khanh Hoa Digital Technology Festival 2024.

Although the implementation of introducing the registration of “.vn” domain names in the province has not been widely implemented, initially some people have known and approached to implement it. According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Thang - Director of VNNIC, the policies being implemented have created favorable conditions for people and businesses to quickly have an online presence. Specifically, people and businesses will be exempted from 2 years of use; “.vn” domain name registrants will be exempted from 2 years of website and email digital services; activities to support businesses in digital transformation are taking place extensively... With the free online domain name registration system and seamless digital services with an intuitive, simple and convenient interface, registering domain names and creating websites and emails becomes easier, the need for online presence and branding of people and businesses is increasing.

Popularizing the domain name “.vn” to all people

Deployed from May 2024, the program aims to reach at least 400,000 “.id.vn” and “.biz.vn” domain names and digital services registered by the end of 2025; reach at least 1 million “.vn” domain names, with a rate of 9 to 10 “.vn” domain names per 1,000 people. This goal shows the great expectation of the Ministry of Science and Technology in popularizing the national domain name “.vn”, in order to promote the development of digital society, digital economy, create a safe, healthy, and trustworthy Vietnamese internet environment with the national domain name “.vn” and digital services created and operated by Vietnamese enterprises. The biggest difficulty in implementing the program is how to raise awareness among people and enterprises about online presence on the internet environment. Therefore, the province issued a plan to implement this program in the area to transform awareness into action in registering to use, experience, and expand access opportunities through online presence using the domain name ".vn". Thereby, contributing to improving the province's Provincial Digital Transformation Index (DTI) and Provincial E-commerce Index (EBI). The province's goal is to have about 1,200 ".id.vn" domain names and 300 ".bz.vn" domain names registered for use by the end of 2025. To achieve that goal, the province will communicate and introduce the program to 100% of businesses in the area, especially small and medium enterprises, 100% of universities, colleges, and vocational schools.

According to Mr. Pham Quoc Hoan - Director of the Department of Science and Technology, implementing the plan of the Provincial People's Committee, the department will preside over, coordinate, and guide units and localities to deploy uniformly and synchronously; coordinate with the Vietnam Internet Center to implement training, coaching, and communication programs about the program. In addition, the department will organize events to introduce the benefits of digital services associated with the domain name ".vn"; place the logo and program information on the Department's website; guide units and localities to place the logo and program information on the pages and electronic information portals of the units and localities.

In 1994, the Vietnamese national domain name “.vn” first appeared on the Internet, marking Vietnam’s sovereignty in cyberspace. Over the past 30 years, the domain name “.vn” has always affirmed its important role in connecting people with the digital environment. According to VNNIC statistics, Vietnam has more than 613,000 “.vn” domain names, ranking 2nd in ASEAN, 10th in Asia - Pacific and 40th in the world.
