Acting Prime Minister of Thailand Phumtham Wechayachai on July 28 assessed that the ceasefire agreement recently reached with Cambodia was thanks to extensive international coordination, with strong support from major powers including the US, China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Speaking after returning from peace talks in Putrajaya, Malaysia, where both Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire starting at midnight on July 29, the Thai leader said all sides shared a common goal of achieving a ceasefire to prevent civilian casualties.

The Thai acting prime minister said a joint military discussion between Thailand’s 1st and 2nd Military Regions and their Cambodian counterparts is scheduled to take place at 7 a.m. on July 29. He added that initial coordination and dialogue have already taken place. If the bilateral talks end smoothly, a broader meeting with international observers will follow to witness the peace process.

Regarding the overall outcome of the ceasefire talks, Mr. Phumtham said that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who chaired the talks as ASEAN Chair, had officially informed ASEAN member states of the outcome. All parties welcomed the breakthrough.

Further talks would be necessary, Mr Phumtham added, and the military would take the lead in resolving these outstanding issues.
