Digital music race: Gains and losses

Vietnamese music is entering a period of vibrant development, when digital platforms such as TikTok, YouTube... become the main "stage" for artists and audiences. Every week, a new hit appears, a melody covers social networks, or a young artist suddenly becomes famous. However, behind that vibrant picture are concerns about artistic value, about works that have a lasting vitality over time...

Tung Duong is an artist who is always creative with an experimental spirit.

Don't just follow the trend of the moment.

The emergence of TikTok, YouTube, Facebook… has made the path to bringing music to the public shorter and easier than ever before. With just a 15-30 second piece of music, an eye-catching dance clip or “trendy” lyrics, artists, especially young faces, can quickly become a phenomenon.

From Son Tung M-TP’s “Run Now”, Hoang Thuy Linh’s “Gieo Que” or “See Tinh” to modern folk remixes, all demonstrate the powerful influence of music on digital platforms. And recently, Hoa Minzy’s MV “Bac Bling” quickly created a fever on social networks, rising to the top of domestic music charts and making an international mark.

However, behind these phenomena, there are still many concerns and worries of those in the profession. Chasing views and shares makes many artists compose mainly to create trends rather than invest in artistic depth. Many songs are monotonous, have repetitive structures, and easy lyrics, all just to achieve high rankings on the trending charts. As for the visuals, many products exploit shocking, humorous or sexy elements to attract views.

A typical example is “The Bad Career” by rapper Phao. This song reached 10 million views in just 3 days, topping the YouTube trending chart, surpassing even Hoa Minzy’s product. However, the viral level contrasts with the artistic quality when “The Bad Career” caused a lot of controversy in terms of content and style, making many people question whether the current music evaluation standards are too lenient?

Discussing this issue, Associate Professor Dr. Le Van Toan - former Director of the Vietnam National Academy of Music emphasized that music is a special field, where emotions and inner vibrations are closely connected between the composer and the listener. A work is only sustainable when it creates empathy, while products that follow temporary tastes are often soon forgotten. For audiences with high aesthetic taste, they find it difficult to accept such superficial and depthless artistic values.

Sharing the same view, musician Dinh Van Binh (member of the Hanoi Music Association) said that for a musical product to become famous, the composer or performer must be talented, dedicated, have emotional depth and have serious investment in artistic quality. Recently, some works with low artistic value, poor content, even substandard lyrics, but still caused a fever on social networks because of the entertainment and humor elements, meeting the temporary needs of a part of the young audience.

“In today’s “digital music era”, artists have the advantage of quickly spreading their works on social media platforms. But the loss will be greater if it is a work that is poor in content and artistic quality, and such a work will be easily forgotten,” said musician Dinh Van Binh.

Artists must have their own identity.

Besides the wave of commercial music and short-term hits, there are still many artists who steadfastly pursue a serious creative path, investing carefully in both music and image. Among them, Hoang Thuy Linh is one of the pioneers pursuing this direction. Her album "LINK" blends modern pop with folk materials such as Northern folk songs, ca tru, and traditional musical instruments, contributing to inspiring the exploration of Vietnamese culture among young people.

Tung Duong is also a typical example of an artist who is always creative with an experimental spirit. He does not hesitate to renew himself through each work, while exploiting folk materials, combined with contemporary music, to create unique and profound products. As for artist Den Vau, although originating from rap - a genre that is considered "street" but stands out with close, poetic lyrics, often containing philosophical thoughts, gentle but profound.

Both of them do not follow the “trend” but still maintain a loyal audience. They are proof that serious artistic values still have a place and influence.

Associate Professor Dr. Le Van Toan believes that true artists always aspire to authentic and genuine values. The good news is that society has begun to have a more correct view of the role of education in shaping the personality and capacity of artists. To build a sustainable art, education must be implemented from the roots, the most basic foundations.

“For artists, the journey of development does not stop at theoretical knowledge learned in school or practical experience in the profession. They need to continuously practice and improve themselves, so that from each step they can conquer an artistic peak, and continue to reach another peak. Only by that path can artists maintain their own identity, not be swept away by temporary trends, create long-lasting artistic values, and have lasting vitality in the hearts of the public,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Toan.

Musician Dinh Van Binh believes that in order for artists to not be swept away by short-term trends but still maintain their personal identity and create sustainable artistic value, in addition to passion, love for art and dedication, they need to seriously invest in their works. A quality music product not only requires good content in terms of ideas and themes but also needs to be carefully crafted in terms of artistic quality and form of expression. Of course, the work also needs to be suitable for public tastes, events and the time of publication on digital platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, etc. This is a great opportunity for artists to reach a wider audience, but at the same time it is also a challenge to maintain quality and artistic identity in a fiercely competitive environment.
