On October 3, former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney joined Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on the campaign trail. Both declared that former President Donald Trump was unqualified to lead the United States, and called on voters to put national interests above party.

Liz Cheney and her father, Dick Cheney, former vice president under George W. Bush, have both been vocal critics of Mr. Trump.

The Cheneys are among the most prominent Republicans to back Harris in the November 5 election against Republican candidate Trump.

Both Liz Cheney and her father have been fierce critics of Trump, insisting that the former president has refused to concede defeat in the 2020 election and that his role in the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol was enough to disqualify him from the race.

"I was a Republican before Donald Trump started tanning," Cheney joked at a Wisconsin rally, describing herself as a conservative in the Ronald Reagan vein.

"I am proud to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris," she said, marking her first time voting for a Democratic candidate.

Ms Cheney's remarks could help Ms Harris appeal to Republican and independent voters, as polls show a tight race between Ms Harris and Mr Trump.

To win, Ms. Harris needs to convince Republicans and independents to distrust Mr. Trump, without alienating her core voters, especially in swing states like Wisconsin that could decide the election outcome.

Liz Cheney was the top Republican on the House Committee investigating the January 6 riots, which earned her the ire of Trump and pushed her to the margins of the party. She also lost her seat as a congresswoman after losing a congressional election, which included criticism and calls for an investigation into Trump's role in the January 6 riots.

“Our republic is facing an unprecedented threat,” Ms Cheney said, referring to Mr Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

"What happened on January 6th showed us that there is not an ounce of compassion in Donald Trump. He is petty, hateful and cruel. And Donald Trump is not qualified to lead this great nation," Ms. Cheney emphasized.

Ms Cheney said she and the Democratic nominee may disagree on some issues, but they both share a responsibility to the Constitution. "Ms Harris will be a president who protects law and order," Ms Cheney said.

Recent polls show Ms. Harris struggling to attract Republican voters, despite receiving public endorsements from hundreds of former Republican military, national security and local government officials.

At the October 3 event, Ms. Harris praised Ms. Cheney for putting the national interest above party and called Ms. Cheney's endorsement "a profound honor."

Meanwhile, many key members of the Republican Party criticized Ms. Cheney for officially going against the policy and prestige of the Republican Party when she publicly campaigned for Ms. Harris.
