Previously, DQT was diagnosed with thalassemia at 7 months old and his family regularly took him to the hospital for blood transfusions. To date, he has had to have blood transfusions 12 times.

According to doctors, thalassemia is a genetic disease that causes microcytic anemia, seriously affecting the physical and mental development of children. In severe cases, children must rely on regular blood transfusions, causing iron overload in the body, causing iron accumulation in the body's organs. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is considered the optimal treatment method, providing the opportunity for complete recovery for children, helping them to live healthy lives without blood transfusions.
Therefore, after HLA testing, patient DQT was confirmed to be a complete match with her biological sister, so doctors at Hue Central Hospital performed an allogeneic bone marrow transplant on April 4. After the bone marrow transplant, the patient's platelets recovered on the 23rd day, granulocytes recovered on the 16th day, and the patient's health improved well, so the doctor discharged her from the hospital.

In the case of patient D.PN, who was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma 9 months ago, doctors at Hue Central Hospital performed an autologous stem cell transplant. After the transplant, the patient's platelets and granulocytes recovered on the 30th day and he was discharged from the hospital.
Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, said that the successful treatment of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for a child with thalassemia is a major step forward in the application of allogeneic stem cell transplantation techniques. The child no longer has to depend on daily blood transfusions and iron excretion. This brings hope to children with thalassemia, opening up treatment prospects for other diseases requiring allogeneic bone marrow transplantation such as bone marrow failure, congenital immunodeficiency and recurrent cancer.
