Critically ill man saved by emergency "red alert" procedure

(Dan Tri) - A patient with a severe spleen rupture and multiple critical injuries after a traffic accident was saved thanks to a red alert between two hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City.

Tan Phu District Hospital (HCMC) said that this unit has just successfully saved the life of a patient who suffered a serious traffic accident.

Male patient NMH (41 years old) entered the hospital's Emergency Department on the morning of April 18, in critical condition, with severe abdominal pain, low blood pressure, rapid pulse, and pale skin and mucous membranes.

Here, doctors diagnosed the patient with hemorrhagic shock, multiple trauma, closed chest and abdominal trauma, and monitored for traumatic brain injury.

Bedside FAST ultrasound results showed a lot of free fluid in the abdomen, suspected of splenic rupture causing acute hemorrhagic shock. CT scan results also showed that the patient had grade IV-V splenic rupture, lumbar spine transverse process fracture, multiple bilateral rib fractures, and left hemothorax.

Immediately, Tan Phu District Hospital quickly activated the inter-hospital red alert, contacted and received emergency support from People's Hospital 115.

In just a short time, the General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesia and Resuscitation team of People's Hospital 115 arrived at Tan Phu District Hospital to perform surgery on the patient.

The emergency surgery was performed immediately with the coordination of doctors from the two hospitals. After more than 3 hours of surgery, the patient overcame the critical condition and was transferred to the intensive care unit at the General Surgery Department, Tan Phu District Hospital.

After 11 days of treatment, the patient was discharged from the hospital in stable condition and recovered well.

According to the leader of Tan Phu District Hospital, the successful emergency operation affirms the practical effectiveness of the internal and inter-hospital "red alert" process, helping to save the lives of patients in critical situations.
