Phu Quoc is one of the three new special zones of An Giang province, along with Tho Chau and Kien Hai special zones. Phu Quoc special zone has a total area of over 589km2 , including the entire natural area and population of the two wards of Duong Dong and An Thoi and the six communes of Duong To, Ham Ninh, Cua Duong, Bai Thom, Ganh Dau, and Cua Can of Phu Quoc city (old).
Phu Quoc Special Zone - the driving force for tourism development in the southern island region
Established as a special administrative and economic unit, Phu Quoc special zone plays a strategic role in many fields: it is a marine economic center, a locomotive for tourism development, a strong attraction for foreign investment capital, and an important international trade gateway of the Mekong Delta region.
In particular, with a synchronous infrastructure system including an international airport, seaport and inter-regional transport network, Phu Quoc is a key connection point between Vietnam and ASEAN and major economic centers in the world.
Becoming a special economic zone helps Phu Quoc have the opportunity to apply breakthrough policies and mechanisms on investment, finance and administration, thereby promoting rapid, sustainable and comprehensive development. The special economic zone government is granted high autonomy in land management, construction, social security, etc., creating conditions for organizing a compact, people-friendly, practical administrative apparatus, effectively handling procedures, removing bottlenecks, and promoting socio-economic development.

An Giang province aims to develop Phu Quoc into a center of marine economy, smart urban area and sustainable eco-tourism, promoting international integration and attracting high-quality investment resources. At the same time, preserving the ecological environment and indigenous culture during the development process.
Priority areas include: developing green tourism, marine logistics services, high technology, financial services; investing in completing international airports, upgrading seaports, expanding urban transport and telecommunications infrastructure; linking training of high-quality human resources; planning green spaces, waste management, developing renewable energy and building a specific legal framework for the special economic zone model.
From pristine fishing village to dynamic economic and tourist center
In the world, there are many successful models of special economic zones such as Shenzhen (China) or Jeju (Korea) which all started from pristine coastal areas, mainly relying on traditional fishing. However, this geographical feature has become a strategic advantage: convenient for transportation, trade, import and export of goods and attracting foreign investment.
The special economic zone development strategy has created miracles for the economies of these cities. Shenzhen has developed rapidly to become a world-leading megacity, especially in the technology and finance sectors, while Jeju has been particularly successful in tourism, with millions of visitors each year.
Predictions about Phu Quoc are no exception to that rule. From a simple "pearl island" that relied on the sea, this place has grown strongly, becoming a dynamic economic and tourism center, playing an increasingly important role in the development of the Mekong Delta and the whole country.

After more than two decades of development, Phu Quoc’s economy has undergone a remarkable transformation. The growth rate of production value in the period 2011-2024 remained at over 38% per year, 6 times higher than the national average.
Phu Quoc also impresses with its exponential tourism growth. In the first 6 months of this year alone, Phu Quoc is estimated to have welcomed nearly 4.5 million visitors, an increase of 33.3% over the same period last year, reaching 61.1% of the plan set for the year. International visitors alone are estimated to have welcomed nearly 900,000 visitors (an increase of 76.7% over the same period) and total revenue reached about VND 21,588 billion (an increase of 92.6% over the same period).
In recent years, the appearance of Phu Quoc has made many tourist “hot spots” in Vietnam envious, with more than 300 investment projects. The participation of private economic groups such as: Sun Group, VinGroup, BIM Group... has created a high-class resort tourism ecosystem spanning the entire island, with world-famous hotel management brands such as: Marriott International, Accor or Rosewood Hotels, Curio Collection by Hilton... and soon Rixos, The Luxury Collection, Ritz Carlton Reserve...
In particular, every night, the south of the island is "lit up" by brilliant artistic fireworks displays, along with international-class shows, leaving its mark with world-famous iconic structures such as: the world's longest 3-wire cable car, and the Kissing Bridge.
Special mechanisms and policies for developing special zones are the foundation, and the organization of the upcoming APEC event will be an international stage, helping Phu Quoc step out into the world with a completely new image, a destination for tourism, events and global economy, a new symbol of Vietnam's integration.
