Dak Lak: Traditional handmade pottery making of the Mnong people is included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just issued Decision No. 3991/QD-BVHTTDL on announcing the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage for the pottery making profession of the Mnong people in Yang Tao commune, Lak district, Dak Lak province.

The pottery making craft of the Mnong people in Yang Tao commune, Lak district is a special type of intangible cultural heritage. Through many ups and downs, the Mnong people in Yang Tao commune still preserve the traditional craft of making handmade pottery.

Traditional handmade pottery artisan

The Mnong people make pottery in a very unique way. The raw materials are unmixed clay, completely handmade, using bamboo sticks to create horizontal and wave patterns, the pottery is fired in the open with firewood, and fermented with rice husks.

Finished ceramic products

The pottery making process of the Mnong people is also very special. After collecting the clay, removing impurities, placing the clay on a mortar to pound it until smooth, then creating a blank to make the product. Unlike the way of making pottery in other regions, the Mnong people do not use a turntable, but instead place the smooth clay on a wooden base about 70cm high, and the potter moves around the base. Then, the potter uses thinly shaved bamboo sticks to shape the product, and uses a wet cloth to smooth the product. After drying the product to a certain degree, the artisan uses a stick to draw patterns and motifs, rubs the surface with a pebble to make it shiny, and then continues to dry it in the shade. Finally, arrange the pottery on a pile of dry firewood, small inside, large around the outside, then light a fire to bake the pottery until it is all bright red. Finally, use rice husks and sawdust to create the characteristic shiny black color of Yang Tao pottery.
