There are currently 189 reservoirs of all kinds in the province, with a total storage capacity of over 365 million m³ of water; of which 176 are in operation, serving domestic water supply, agricultural and industrial production and drought prevention. Many large projects such as Yen Lap Lake, Khe Che Lake, Cao Van Lake, Truc Bai Son Lake... play a particularly important role in ensuring water supply for residential areas and concentrated production.
In addition, the rich river system with major rivers such as Ka Long River, Tien Yen River, Ba Che River, Da Bac River... also contributes to providing abundant water resources in the area. The total annual surface water resources from rivers and streams in Quang Ninh province is 8.33 billion m 3 .
Over the past years, the province has had many solutions to manage, exploit and use water resources rationally. Dozens of investment projects to build and upgrade reservoirs, pumping stations and water plants have been implemented, contributing to improving water supply capacity and preventing natural disasters.
Water quality protection is also emphasized. The province has conducted regular monitoring of surface water and groundwater quality, especially in sensitive areas such as coal mining areas, coastal industrial zones, concentrated aquaculture areas, etc. The work of providing clean water to people has also achieved many results. Currently, over 95% of the urban population and about 85% of the rural population of the province use clean water.
One of the important highlights is the integration of water resource management with other socio -economic development programs. In agriculture, the province has directed the application of water-saving irrigation technology and the conversion of crop structures to reduce water pressure. Currently, in Quang Ninh province, there are 740 projects exploiting and using water for agriculture, including 176 operating reservoirs, 460 dams and 104 irrigation and drainage pumping stations.
The province has 48 projects exploiting water resources for industrial purposes, of which 9 projects are licensed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, 39 projects are licensed by the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province; with a total exploitation flow for industrial use of 24,720,000m3 /day and night. New industrial zones are required to build centralized wastewater treatment systems, ensuring no direct discharge into the environment. In tourism and services, many models of water saving and water reuse have been implemented, especially in hotels and resorts.
However, in addition to the achievements, there is a risk of water quality and reserves being degraded due to coal mining activities, industrial development, rapid urbanization and the impact of climate change. Some coastal areas have recorded the phenomenon of saltwater intrusion deep into the inland, affecting people's lives and production. Local pollution of water sources near mineral exploitation areas still exists, requiring drastic and long-term management solutions.
Faced with this reality, the province has been and is continuing to implement many solutions to ensure sustainable use of water resources. The focus is on strengthening the management of water exploitation and use according to planning; improving the capacity to forecast and monitor water resources; promoting afforestation and protecting upstream forests to retain water, prevent erosion and limit floods. At the same time, the province encourages the application of advanced technology in water treatment, water saving and water reuse in production and daily life. Propaganda and raising public awareness about water resource protection have also been promoted, contributing to forming the habit of using water economically and effectively throughout society.
With the achieved results, the right direction, the determination of the entire political system and the consensus of the people, Quang Ninh is gradually building a solid foundation to protect and effectively exploit water resources associated with the goal of green and sustainable development.
