On March 3, German media reported that at least one person was killed and several others were injured when a car drove into a crowd at Paradeplatz square in Mannheim, southwestern Germany.

Witnesses reported seeing a black SUV hit several pedestrians in Planken, Mannheim’s main shopping street. Armed police were on the Paradeplatz square, blocking bridges near Ludwigshaden.
Reuters news agency reported that German police have arrested a driver, but it is not clear whether this was an accident or a deliberate act and whether any other people were involved in the incident.
Local authorities have issued a warning on their emergency alert app about a “life-threatening situation.” Police have also asked people to stay indoors and away from the city center.
Police are currently conducting an operation in the city centre of Mannheim, while rescue work is underway.
Security has become a major concern in Germany after a series of violent attacks in recent weeks, including deadly car crashes in Magdeburg in December 2024 and in Munich last month.
German police are on high alert for this year's festival parades, after social media accounts linked to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group called for attacks on events in Cologne and Nuremberg.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has canceled her attendance at the Cologne parade on Monday, Germany's largest, due to the events in Mannheim.
