The 8th Enlarged Plenary Session of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) opened on June 16.
Delegates discuss on the 4th working day of the 6th enlarged plenary session of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea in Pyongyang on December 30, 2022.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the plenary session will review the work of various sectors and evaluate the country's economy in the first half of this year. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended the event. The conference will also discuss and decide on important policy issues such as strengthening the Party's work, building the state, and the country's diplomatic and defense strategies to cope with the changing international situation.
The fact that the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea held two plenary meetings in the first half of a year seems unprecedented, as Pyongyang usually convenes this type of meeting only once or twice a year.
In February, the WPK also held a plenum to discuss the country's agricultural issues. North Korea appears to be facing economic difficulties, as it is constrained by international sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs and the lingering effects of a lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
