On November 27, in response to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (NDP), the Association of Persons with Disabilities of Can Tho City in collaboration with the Center for Research and Action for Inclusive Development and the United Nations Development Program organized a workshop on "Announcing the results of the assessment of accessibility of public works in some communes and wards in Can Tho City".

Delegates attending the workshop.
According to the research team's report, through the survey results of 22 public works in 6 communes and wards of Can Tho city in 2025, there is 1 work that meets full accessibility, 7 works that meet basic accessibility, the rest are at the level of accessibility and inaccessibility. Many mandatory items such as ramps, wide doors, seamless corridors and accessible toilets do not meet standards. Through measurement analysis, more than 80% of toilets, 60% of main doors, 70% of entrances are not wheelchair-friendly. Interview results show that awareness of accessibility rights among PWDs and public service providers is still limited. The merger of communes and wards opens up opportunities to re-plan and build new People's Committee headquarters, schools and health stations, which is a favorable time to apply accessible design from the beginning.
The research team proposed 6 groups of feasible solutions: issuing handbooks and sample drawings on accessibility design; integrating accessibility criteria into the set of indicators for assessing communes and wards; training grassroots officials; prioritizing investment in accessibility for new constructions after the merger; quickly renovating existing infrastructure with low-cost solutions; strengthening the monitoring role of PWD organizations. Thereby, increasing the rate of works meeting accessibility standards from the current 5% to 30-40% in 3 years, creating a friendly, safe and inclusive public service environment for everyone, especially PWDs...
