On November 27, in Can Tho City, the Vietnam Rice Industry Association (VIETRISA), the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment - NN&MT) and the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) organized a workshop on "Promoting the expansion of high-quality and low-emission rice production areas towards the target of 1 million hectares by 2030".

Representatives of leaders of units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, institutes, schools, Departments of Agriculture and Environment of localities in the Mekong Delta, scientists, businesses... in the agricultural sector also attended.

Many delegates attended the conference.

The project on sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030 has been implemented for the past 2 years (2024, 2025). VIETRISA has affirmed the feasibility of the production models in the project. At the end of the summer-autumn crop of 2025, the area participating in the project reached 354,839 hectares, exceeding the target by 197%. Participating farmers have reduced production costs by 1.7-4.9 million VND/ha compared to production outside the model, equivalent to reducing production costs by 326-1,052 VND/kg of fresh rice. The amount of seeds sown is reduced by 50-65%, equivalent to saving about 70-130kg/ha, the average amount of nitrogen fertilizer is reduced by 31.3% and the amount of irrigation water is reduced, meeting the standard of draining water at least 2-3 times, reducing 1-3 times of spraying pesticides. More importantly, the yield in the model increases by 1.4-15.9 quintals/ha, equivalent to an average of 3.2-22.1% compared to traditional farming. In the winter-spring crop, the model's emission reduction reaches 3.7 tons of CO2 equivalent/ha/crop...

Delegates visited rice products produced according to high-quality, low-emission, climate-resilient standards on display at the workshop.

At the workshop, delegates shared practical experiences and agreed on a number of specific recommendations on the application of technical advances that can be applied immediately, helping to reduce seeds - reduce fertilizer - reduce emissions while still increasing income, taking soil health as a long-term foundation, building sustainable links between businesses and farmers based on contracts, commitments, and mutual responsibilities... From lessons learned and implementation models with effective linkages, the workshop proposed important directions to expand the scale of high-quality and low-emission rice production in the period of 2026-2030, focusing on the chain linkage of businesses - cooperatives - farmers, market standards and evidence of emission reduction. This event demonstrates the spirit of proactiveness, quick response, and drastic implementation of the direction of Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam: "No waiting - must immediately start organizing implementation, replicating models, standardizing chain linkages and creating new values for Vietnamese rice grains".
