Harvesting white radish in Thanh Phu commune, Can Tho city.
Efficiency from growing vegetables
In recent years, the area and output of vegetables in Can Tho City have tended to increase. Many vegetable growing models have proven effective, helping farmers increase their income on the same area of cultivated land. In addition to growing short-term leafy vegetables, farmers in the city have also developed the production of many types of vegetables, fruit vegetables and short-term industrial crops to bring high efficiency. Notably, beans, chili, gourd, squash, squash, corn, purple onion, radish, tomato, bitter melon and melons. Many types of vegetables grown in Can Tho not only meet local demand, but are also consumed in many other provinces in the Mekong Delta and the Southeast, especially in many large industrial parks and agricultural wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province.
Mr. Nguyen Tuan Nhuan in Thoi Hung commune, Can Tho city, said: “My family and many local households grow many types of vegetables, thanks to which we have conditions to increase income. Vegetables often have a short growing time, so farmers can grow many crops each year and have income all year round. Recently, the prices of many types of vegetables such as white radish, squash, cucumber, luffa, chili... have more than doubled compared to previous months, many vegetable growers have a good source of income so they are very excited. Currently, white radish is sold by farmers at 10,000 VND/kg, luffa and squash at 18,000 VND/kg, especially chili is priced at more than 50,000 VND/kg”. For leafy vegetables such as water spinach and mustard greens, it usually takes only 18-20 days to harvest and on each hectare of land, farmers can divide the area into many plots to plant seeds every other day to have continuous harvest.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tam in Dong Hiep commune, Can Tho city, in addition to 3 hectares of rice land, his family also uses a part of the land to grow vegetables. Vegetable growing areas bring in 2-4 times more income than rice growing, even higher if the yield is high and the price is good. However, because many stages in vegetable production are mainly done by hand, farmers have to put in more effort than when growing rice. In addition to growing leafy vegetables, his family also grows many types of fruit vegetables, especially beans and melons, and almost every day there are products to harvest. Recently, thanks to vegetable production, he has had an additional source of income of over 120 million VND/year.
Actively support farmers
To help farmers produce vegetables effectively, the city's Department of Agriculture and Environment and localities have updated and regularly provided farmers with information on the market, weather and pest control solutions. Actively provided technical training and guided farmers to grow vegetables according to many different models such as crop rotation, monoculture, planting on ridges or field land... to suit the actual conditions of each locality. At the same time, supported farmers in applying technical advances, new equipment and technologies such as agricultural films, greenhouses, organic fertilizers; built and developed models and vegetable growing areas in a safe and effective direction.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Minh Hieu, Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection under the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, in addition to guiding and supporting farmers to develop clean vegetable production, ensuring quality and safety to meet domestic consumption needs and expand exports, in recent times, the city's Department of Agriculture has also actively trained and guided the development of high-tech vegetable growing models. Instructing farmers to take advantage of straw by-products in rice production to grow straw mushrooms and produce organic fertilizers for crops, including vegetables, thereby helping to produce safely and sustainably, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers.
Up to now, Can Tho City has built and expanded many safe vegetable production areas in communes and wards and developed a variety of vegetables and crops in line with market demand. To facilitate product output, the city's functional agencies also pay attention to supporting and promoting farmers to strengthen their links with businesses along the value chain. Guide farmers in cooperatives and organizations and individuals in safe vegetable production areas to complete procedures to be granted certificates of eligibility for food safety and hygiene production and support in promoting and introducing products on "chonongsancantho.vn" and e-commerce platforms.
After 10 months of 2025, the area of vegetables and short-term industrial crops in the city reached more than 96,270 hectares, reaching 99.25% of the plan and more than 76,440 hectares have been harvested. According to the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Can Tho City, the total area of vegetables, beans of all kinds and short-term industrial crops this year could reach over 101,970 hectares, with a harvest output of over 1.55 million tons. It is expected that farmers in communes and wards in the city will plant about 4,000 hectares of vegetables of all kinds to serve the 2026 Tet market.
