Special teachers

The team of doctors, nurses, and technicians at the Lao Cai Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital silently teach children their first sounds, with every glance, every response – a long journey of accompanying children with developmental delays.

Every day at the Lao Cai Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital, accompanying children with developmental delays is not just about implementing treatment protocols. After each therapy session, the team of doctors, nurses, and technicians patiently teach these children their first sounds, their first glances, and their smallest responses. These things, which are normal for healthy children, represent a long journey for children with special needs.

In addition to their professional duties, the team of doctors, nurses, and technicians also play the role of special "teachers," accompanying children in every skill and every small change. This attentiveness and patience have become a source of emotional support for many families whose children are undergoing treatment.

The doctors here treat patients, including children. Besides their medical duties, they also act as teachers, guiding our children and other children to a better environment. After being taught and guided by these teachers, many students graduate and integrate into society and their peers.

A typical workday for nurses at the Lao Cai Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital is not just about medical care; it's also a journey of accompanying and guiding children with developmental delays step by step. At the beginning of each day, the nurses conduct a quick assessment of each child's condition, determine the necessary level of intervention, and develop a suitable plan, ranging from fine motor and gross motor therapy to language and behavior therapy.

Each child receives 30 minutes of individual intervention, with exercises progressing from easy to difficult, incorporating guidance, demonstrations, suggestions, encouragement, and rewards. This process can sometimes be challenging: hyperactive children, uncooperative children, or those with slow progress require nurses to patiently adjust step by step. However, every glance, every first word, every small skill the child acquires becomes a source of immense happiness and motivation for the medical team.

It is this patience and dedication that has helped many children gradually open the door to integration, improve their life skills, and build a solid foundation of self-confidence, bringing hope to their families and communities.

When teaching children, we have to break down each skill into smaller steps, starting from easy to difficult: creating syllables, expanding vocabulary, and gradually forming longer sentences for children to use in daily life. To do this, teachers always demonstrate first, guiding children to imitate, combining verbal suggestions, gestures, and body language, and gradually reducing support. Throughout the process, encouragement and rewards help children become more enthusiastic, interact better, and progress every day.

Ms. Ta Phuong Thao – nurse and technician, Lao Cai Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital.

From the outset, the hospital develops screening plans and organizes examinations at preschools, communes, and wards to detect early developmental delays in children under 5 years old, thereby developing appropriate intervention plans. After screening, the children will participate in specialized treatment and training programs: from communication training and self-reliance skills development to motor function rehabilitation. These programs not only help children improve their motor and language abilities but also open up opportunities for reintegration into a normal learning environment.

What makes this hospital special is its integration of healthcare and education . Doctors, nurses, and technicians are not only highly skilled in medicine but also trained in pedagogical skills, becoming "special" teachers who patiently accompany children every step of the way during their recovery.

Alongside their direct work, the hospital continuously enhances the capacity of its staff through postgraduate training courses and specialized training in rehabilitation, pediatrics, language, communication, and physiotherapy. The goal is for each healthcare professional to not only provide effective treatment but also become a "teacher" guiding children on their journey of skill development and community integration.

Children in their developmental stage need to be equipped with the skills to access information appropriately. Therefore, in addition to their medical expertise, the staff here also participate in pedagogical skills training courses. Thanks to this, they can communicate with children more effectively, just like professional teachers.

Mr. Do Minh Hoan - Director of the Rehabilitation Hospital of Lao Cai Province.

The quiet efforts of the doctors, nurses, and technicians at the Lao Cai Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital have opened new doors for many children with developmental delays on their journey to integration. Each responsive glance, each clear and articulate word, each perfected skill… is proof of the perseverance of these “special teachers” and the trust of their families.

From that special classroom, many children have confidently stepped out into the community, continuing their education and development like any other child. Behind that success is always the figure of the "teachers in white coats" - those who have chosen to heal with their expertise, nurture with their hearts, and persistently sow seeds of hope for the children's future.
