Story of bamboo...

Cam Thanh Commune, Hoi An City has now become a bustling and attractive tourist experience space for visitors from near and far. But few people know that, decades ago, there used to be a traditional bamboo weaving village here. And the "host" at that time was Mr. Vo Tan Muoi - who still has a deep affinity with bamboo to this day.

Growing up with bamboo, breathing the air and shade of the village bamboo groves, using woven bamboo products... Mr. Vo Tan Muoi has devoted his life to bamboo, bamboo and Cam Thanh water coconut leaves. Starting from simple baskets, trays to trays, sieves, then coconut leaf raincoats or common bamboo items... Bamboo has "taken care" of Mr. Muoi's family through many hardships of making a living.

That is why when the villagers gradually abandoned the bamboo weaving profession, Mr. Muoi was determined to keep the profession. The good news is that his "fateful relationship" with bamboo is now continued by his son Vo Tan Tan and the young people in the village.

They also spent years living with bamboo, were taught by their parents how to treat bamboo, and now have the desire to sublimate the bamboo of their country with sophisticated, friendly and useful products.

Taboo Bamboo Workshop of Mr. Vo Tan Tan's family is not only known as a workshop producing souvenirs, handicrafts and household items made of bamboo. It is now one of the tourist attractions.

There are many interesting products handcrafted from bamboo: from snails, penguins, dragonflies, cute puppets to household items such as tables, chairs, telephones, drinking cups, straws, chopsticks, bamboo bowls...

After graduating from university, Vo Tan Tan had a job according to his education, but then, the call of bamboo drew him back to his hometown and began his journey to continue his father's tradition with bamboo... Tan said: "It was my father who ignited the fire and urged me to return to my hometown and bamboo. That fire also lured me to follow bamboo in a special way until now...".

He began to explore and research products, markets, and interests to gradually find his own path, not to be confused with any product line on the industrial market.

It is bamboo that has taught him and the young people of Taboo Bomboo handicraft workshop a sustainable, environmentally friendly but also very sublime path. Starting with bamboo bicycles, Vo Tan Tan continues to surprise with a line of souvenir products made from bamboo that are sophisticated, eye-catching and contain a profound story of the craft village.

Mr. Tan said: "I want when someone holds one of my products in their hands or brings it back as a souvenir, they will understand that behind that product is a whole story about the traditional craft village and the culture of the country"...

The journey of the areca palm…

Tien Phuoc is the land of areca nuts, but the value of areca trees is not high as they only produce fruit. Struggling to find a new direction for areca products, Ms. Vo Thi Thu Thoi - Loc Yen village, Tien Canh commune, together with many other women in the village, established the Quang Nam Green Areca Nut Cooperative.

The cooperative was born at the same time that Loc Yen village became an interesting tourist destination. This was like a push for Thoi to have more confidence and motivation to embark on the journey to change the fate of the areca tree.

Inspired by the areca tree, the women in the cooperative use products from the areca spathe that has fallen in the garden and has long been forgotten by people, to make areca spathe fashion products such as handbags, hats, trays, flower pots, areca spathe flowers, hats, areca spathe jewelry... attracting the attention of customers, especially women.

It's true: Your body fell along the shore / Dazedly buying the sun, fading away / Lifting you into a fan for many people to relax / Weaving you into a fresh palm leaf bag / Taking you to the market to sell for ten dong of vegetables / Thinking that life has many good things / Throwing it away is trash, being skillful helps life...

In the past, from areca spathe, Tien Phuoc people as well as the countryside of Quang Nam created many essential items for daily life: from rice packages, buckets, baskets to children's toys... The appearance of cheap plastic materials made areca spathe items not competitive enough.

Now, people with the aspiration to turn areca spathe into beautiful, environmentally friendly products, taking advantage of abundant local materials like Ms. Thoi and her colleagues in her cooperative… have written a beautiful story amidst the green of Loc Yen, Tien Phuoc.

Two of the many efforts to bring the village's mark to souvenir products by artisans from Quang Nam have been going smoothly after initial difficulties.

Hopefully, in the near future, each traditional craft village in Quang Nam, in addition to existing as it has for hundreds of years, will find for itself a new, splendid, and elegant shirt, carrying a green aspiration on its journey forward.
