Wrinkled, sagging skin and pigmentation disorders are warning signs of aging. You need to regularly apply sunscreen and change your diet to delay signs of aging.
On September 29, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong, Department of Dermatology, Bach Mai Hospital, said that along with the general aging process of the body, skin aging occurs regularly, continuously and is inevitable. This process begins at the age of 25 or maybe earlier.
When the skin ages, it becomes wrinkled, saggy, and eye bags become more visible. Pigmentation disorders such as age spots, freckles, brown or white spots appear next. There are dilated blood vessels on the skin, the skin's protective and regenerative functions are impaired, it is easily damaged and slow to heal. Wrinkles appear more and more and become deeper. Overall, the skin loses its softness, becomes dry, rough, less firm, and dull.
"Skin aging makes people look old, tired, and lifeless, causing loss of confidence and affecting communication," said Dr. Phuong.
Like other organs in the body, skin aging is caused by both internal and external factors. Internal (biological) aging occurs due to natural changes in the body. These changes are influenced by factors such as genes, cell metabolism, hormones, and metabolism. External (environmental) aging is the result of free radical damage caused by cumulative exposure to sunlight, pollution, cigarette smoke, an unbalanced diet, irregular lifestyle, and improper skin care.
According to Dr. Phuong, the main culprits of skin aging that can be prevented are sunlight, dry skin due to loss of water retention, environmental pollution, living habits, and a stressful lifestyle. Therefore, limiting the above culprits will slow down or improve skin aging.
Methods include sun protection, providing enough moisture for the skin, avoiding polluted and dusty environments, eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits, drinking enough water, and avoiding mental stress. Sun protection measures include using sunscreen, mechanical measures such as sun-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and limiting exposure to the sun between 10am and 2pm.
Using sunscreen correctly is also important. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB when outdoors. When swimming, use a water-resistant sunscreen.
A common mistake is not applying enough sunscreen and only applying it once a day. The recommended amount of sunscreen for the face is 1/4-1/3 teaspoon. Apply 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2-3 hours.
A diet for healthier skin includes: Drinking at least 2 liters of water/day, eating lots of green vegetables and fruits; limiting sweets, grease, fried foods; a diet rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, omega 3, flavonoids, selenium... Flavonoids are abundant in soybean sprouts, chocolate, green tea, wine, grapes... Selenium is abundant in turkey, cereals...
When there are signs of skin aging, you need to see a doctor to accurately assess the level and use topical medications, oral medications, and appropriate cosmetic procedures to help reverse the signs of aging.
